It started seven years ago. October 4, 2008. Kimbo Slice and Ken Shamrock were to face each other in the Cage. Only they didn’t. While sparring backstage, Shamrock wound up with a cut making him medically ineligible to fight Slice. Undercard fighter Seth Petruzelli was tapped by EliteXC to take Shamrock’s place in the superfight.
Petruzelli beat Slice, and his comments one week later that promoters encouraged him to keep the fight standing and that they would give him a bonus for not taking the ground-averse Kimbo down killed EliteXC. Neither Slice nor Shamrock had much of a career after that night.
Which is why Bellator is overly hyping tonight’s rematch. It really is a big deal. Two once titans of their sport finally getting to see who’s the better fighter. Keep in mind that Slice is now 41, while Shamrock is an astonishing 51 years old. I’ll definitely be watching, will you?
The Main Card also features Patricio Pitbull vs. Daniel Weichel in the featherweight title fight, Michael Chandler vs. Derek Campos in the lightweight feature fight, Daniel Straus vs. Henry Corrales in the featherweight feature fight, and Bobby Lashley vs. Dan Charles in the Heavyweight feature fight. It should be an event for the ages.
