I don’t know what’s going on this in world, but the Gods of 4K Restorations have been looking down upon me and blessing me with new editions of some of my favorite movies. Yesterday it was announced that John Carpenter‘s The Fog would be getting the 4K treatment. Today it’s Sam Raimi‘s The Evil Dead. You heard me right, Buster, The Evil Dead and all of its low budget mayhem is getting the deluxe 4K treatment in a new UHD Blu-ray from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. The cult classic that spawned two sequels, a remake, a television series, as well as comic books and video games is being revived with the crispest picture and sound that the film has ever had on any format.
Bruce Campbell stars for the very first time as Ash Williams, a role that he’s played numerous times over the years until the recent cancellation of Ash vs. Evil Dead, which means the character is all but retired. Ash and his group of friends venture off for a weekend at a secluded cabin. Deep within the basement are old pages and a tape recorder. On that tape is ancient spell that gives rise to — dun, dun, dun — The Evil Dead. Of course, this first time around with The Evil Dead Sam Raimi and his collaborators, mostly friends, family, and a little known set of siblings Joel and Ethan Coen, hadn’t divined that the series would work best as a madcap mixture of horror and humor.
Aside from the new 4K transfer of The Evil Dead, the new UHD Blu-ray of the horror classic features audio commentary with Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and producer Robert Tapert. This is likely the old audio commentary track recorded for the film’s initial DVD release years ago, but I remember this commentary track being insightful, informative, and really funny. The trio of longtime friends crack numerous jokes about the low budget nature of their breakout feature while also imparting the various lessons they learned as amateur filmmakers working for the first time.
The forbidden words of the Necronomicon will be read once again when The Evil Dead is resurrected on 4K UHD on October 6, 2018 from Lionsgate Home Entertainment.
The official synopsis for The Evil Dead:
More than 35 years ago, a low-budget horror movie roared across movie screens and changed the velocity of fear forever — and made a cult legend out of Bruce Campbell in his iconic role as the lethal, wisecracking Ash Williams. Now, for the first time, you can experience the ferocious ingenuity, relentless shocks, and gore-gushing havoc of the original Sam Raimi masterpiece in 4K!
Love this movie. Filmed in an actual cabin…
