STK625489How many times have you read a story about kids who through one mysterious circumstance or another enter into a magical world and find ways to make their dreams come true?  These stories usually include a bad guy that the kids take down and then experience a happily ever after.  No one has ever written what would happen if the villain actually won and used the magic for evil purposes.  Not until Joe Hill decided to give a villain a chance to win and manipulate what was supposed to be an innocent diversion for evil purposes.  This is the main premise for Locke & Key and in the final volume Lucas “Dodge” Caravaggio is on his way for total dominance over the keys and Locke House.  Siblings Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode, along with their friends come face to face in a confrontation that jeopardizes all of their lives.  Dodge wants to unleash the other demons in the Drowning Cave and create a world in his total control, but despite the odds against him Tyler might be able to save the day.

Joe Hill really knows how to warp childhood wonder and bring the reality into it.  Continuing with the childhood fantasy comparison, Locke and Key gives birth to what would happen if evil was allowed to work to its fullest extent.  In a kid’s fantasy book, nothing bad really happens or if it does, it’s remedied in the end. Locke and Key, however, isn’t afraid to kill and allow the blood to gush from figurative and real wounds.  No one is safe from being a potential victim and as the series draws to a close, the death toll mounts.  Even when the magical keys are used to counter Dodge’s acts, the potential to do harm rings in the air around them.  The ending is bittersweet.  While the sadness doesn’t leave any of the pages, the last one turns with a bit of hope that good always wins.

Gabriel Rodriguez never shied away from the comic’s grim details and his art even enhanced the cruelty by making it visual.  He has a knack for making Locke and Key feel real and keeping an ethereal suspense around each corner.

One really needs to read Locke and Key from the beginning to enjoy the gruesome fantasy.  Starting at the end with volume six with ruin the pleasure.  Readers who have been with the series will breathe a sigh of relief that the suspense is over, but saddened that the adventures won’t continue.
