‘The Conqueror: Hollywood Fallout‘ A Documentary About the Worst John Wayne Movie Ever Made Screens Twice at the Newport Beach Film Festival (NBFF).
How on Earth does, ‘The Conqueror‘, considered the worst movie the legendary John Wayne ever made connected to a one of the worst manmade disasters in the United States?
‘The Conqueror‘ was produced by RKO pictures and the eccentric Howard Hughes wanted to make a grand scale film about the life of Genghis Khan, naturally, when you think Mongolian leader who ruled over all of continental Asia that 10% of the population are direct descendants of his, you think The Duke.
The movie itself, even by yesteryears standards as racist, the mostly forgettable film is tied to the United States government and atomic bomb testing area near St. George, UT. Filming in an area that could pass for Mongolia, the main issue that was hidden from the citizens in the region and the cast crew members was that region was so riddled with nuclear fallout that almost half them contracted cancer!
Making its world premiere at the Newport Beach Film Festival (NBFF) takes on the controversy not only in the making of ‘The Conqueror‘ but also the tragedy that fell upon the people of Utah.
We spoke with Producer Douglas Waller and Producer/Director William Nunez about the government cover up, the suffering of those who were lost and their descendants as well as those continuing to suffer from the follow out.
Following tonight’s screening, there will be a Q&A with Waller and Nunez.
Official Synopsis:
Hollywood is littered with bad movies. The Conqueror is one of the worst in a crowded field of terrible films. John Wayne stars as Genghis Khan and things only get worse from there. While it suffers from a host of racist and sexist issues and more quality issues-the reason it is still discussed today is because many residents of the Utah town where the film was shot and nearly half the cast and crew contracted cancer. This is a story of government lies, careless production decisions, and the most powerful weapon ever created by humankind.
