‘The Blind Sea‘ challenges the notion of limitations, disabilities and the ability to conquer the waves with only 3% vision at Newport Beach Film Festival (NBFF).
Screening at the 25th anniversary of the Newport Beach Film Festival (NBFF), ‘The Blind Sea‘ is a stunning documentary that captures the incredible journey of Australian blind surfer Matt Formston, who with only 3% vision, becomes a three-time World Champion and takes on the perilous waves of Nazaré, pushing his limits like never before.
‘The Blind Sea‘ is inspirational, humorous and breathtaking, showcasing Formston’s resilience against the odds. Diagnosed with Macular Dystrophy at age five, he shares his unique insights and the processes that have driven his remarkable success in and out of the water. Facing a lifetime of judgment and prejudice, Formston’s story is a powerful testament to overcoming adversity with the use of drive, determination and Australian wit.
Featuring perspectives from surfing legends like Layne Beachley AO, Sam Bloom, and Joel Parkinson, ‘The Blind Sea‘ follows Formston on his quest to break the world record for blind surfers, all while attempting to conquer the monster waves at Nazaré. The film beautifully captures the camaraderie and support he receives from fellow surfers and highlights his determination to inspire the next generation, including his own family’s admiration for his championship aspirations.
Formston has since become a four-time Para Surfing World Champion and a former Paralympic cyclist, also holding world records in able-bodied tandem cycling and for surfing the largest wave by a vision-impaired male at 15.48 meters. His journey exemplifies resilience and tenacity, traits instilled in him by his parents, who were determined to provide him with a fulfilling life despite his challenges.
Directed by award-winning filmmaker Daniel Fenech, ‘The Blind Sea‘ is Fenech’s feature directorial debut. With a background in short-form documentaries, Fenech expertly weaves together themes of cultural responsibility and community engagement, creating a narrative rich in heart, laughs and inspiration. I have lived half my life by the beach and Fenech’s eye for visual storytelling ALMOST makes me want to get a surfboard and hit the waves.
‘The Blind Sea‘ not only showcases the thrill of big-wave surfing but also highlights incredible role models in the Diversity and Inclusion sector.
