Last night, the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts treated their attendees to an unforgettable evening as “America’s Band“, The Beach Boys! The kings of surf tunes and the soundtrack to the California Dream, brought their signature energy and timeless tunes to a sold-out crowd. Lead vocalist, Mike Love and keyboardist, Bruce Johnston now in their 80s, proved that their passion for music and their commitment to keeping The Beach Boys legacy alive remains as strong as ever.
From the moment they hit the stage, Love and Johnston, along with their talented bandmates—Brian Eichenberger, Christian Love (Mike’s son), Tim Bonhomme, Jon Bolton, Keith Hubacher, Randy Leago, and John Wedemeyer—transcended their respective generations. The crowd couldn’t help but be swept up in the nostalgia of the band’s greatest hits, from the joyous “Help Me Rhonda” to the lush harmonies of “God Only Knows.” It was clear that The Beach Boys’ music still resonates deeply with both long-time fans and a new generation discovering the band’s magic for the first time as great grandparents and grandparents brought their Generation Alpha offspring to the the concert.
A particularly heartwarming moment came when Love, ever the charismatic frontman, took time to honor his cousin, writing partner and original Beach Boy, Brian Wilson. Love dedicated several moments of the night to Wilson, acknowledging their deep family bond and creative partnership. Though the two men have very different personalities and working styles, Love’s words reflected a profound respect and admiration for his cousin, one that has been repeatedly tested over their 60 years of musical collaboration. It was a touching reminder of the familial connection at the heart of The Beach Boys.
Another tender tribute came in honor of the late Carl Wilson. Love’s son, Christian, stepped up to perform several of his uncle’s iconic songs. His renditions of Carl’s classics added a beautiful, emotional layer to the evening, reminding fans of the enduring legacy of the Wilson family’s musical genius. Christian’s voice, echoing his uncle’s warmth and soulfulness, was a highlight of the show, reminding everyone that music exists outside of a particular era.
As the concert unfolded, the audience sang along to the band’s timeless classics, including the Golden Globe-nominated “Kokomo” (which is far more remembered, than the Tom Cruise film, “Cocktail” from the movie soundtrack which it originated) and the ground-breaking “Good Vibrations.” The music flowed effortlessly, each song a testament to the Beach Boys’ unparalleled impact on the pop and rock genres.
From their explosive debut more than 60 years ago to their continued success today, The Beach Boys have forever altered the musical landscape. Last night’s performance was a celebration of their past, present, and the future of a band that continues to inspire generations. It’s clear that the energy, harmony, and familial spirit that have defined The Beach Boys will live on for years to come.
