The Assassin’s Code is an exciting indie film thriller with a big budget feel and a 1970s cop film appeal.
Michael Connolly (Justin Chatwin) is a smart ass, loner, rookie detective and the son of a disgraced police officer that appeared to have died in a drug deal gone bad. Connolly finally gets his break when a fellow cop tasked with handling leads on the department’s drug bust evidence goes missing. Sadly, all this puts a strain on Michael’s marriage with his concert cellist wife, Jia (Elizabeth Anweis), a woman who seeks to be supportive of her husband but is only able to get within arms reach of her love because of his own insecurities.
Unfortunately for Michael and his new case, he is shadowed by Kurt Schlychter (Peter Stormare) a ruthless, emotionless assassin that has no problem killing anyone from the lowest thugs to dirty cops. If this case is blown
Justin Chatwin is Michael Connolly in ‘The Assassin’s Code.’
wide open, Michael can put away the mob and Schlychter for a very long time.
I’m still blown away as to how producer/director David A. Armstrong was able to finish such a well polished film for an estimated $1.8 million budget. This easily could pass for a $20 million picture and that alone is reason enough to watch The Assassin’s Code, however the scene between Schlychter and Jia transforms the movie entirely. It takes a nearly one dimensional assassin and transforms him into a well round character that is not sympathetic but allows you to understand his motives.
An even more impressive acting role went to Mark Thompson who played Captain Jack O’Brien. A former Los Angeles morning drive-time host on KLOS and now a podcaster with his wife Lynda, Thompson was someone I never though of as an actor, let alone a good one…sorry Mark, that came across as rude.
The Assassin’s Code is available now on Amazon Prime and well worth a watch.
