tempest_academy_logoThis weekend, January 25-26, BodyBuilding.com’s TheFitExpo™ returns for its 11th year and will be at the Los Angeles Convention Center. This is the West Coast’s largest and best-known fitness event featuring 400 exhibits, 20 major competitions, and many of the world’s top fitness celebrities. TheFitExpo™ continues to grow and has added several new attractions for 2014 including: Extreme Tricking Challenge, Parkour/FreeRunning, and a Fitness Career Center. Hosting the Parkour/FreeRunning attraction is San Fernando Valley’s Tempest Freerunning Academy (TFA).

We here at Fanboy Nation got an exclusive look at what to expect and some of the basics of Parkour and Freerunning from TFA’s Gym Manager Michael Conley.

“ FanboyNation: What can we expect from TFA at the TheFitExpo™

Michael: We will be showing the basics of Parkour and maybe we’ll touch a little bit on Free Running. We will also have some giveaways and we will have a few competitions as well such as longest kong and longest precision.

FanboyNation: What is a kong?

Michael: Yes kong, the kong is a vault one of the basic vaults of Parkour and Free Running. It involves going over an obstacle starting with your hands and bringing your feet under you.

FanboyNation: How does someone get started in Parkour?

Michael: A lot of people find us online or they heard about it from a friend and they just come in and try it. There is also a number of people who really have been doing Parkour since they were kids and they just really didn’t know it. Now they’d like to add some structure to the moves they’ve been doing since they were in middle school or grade school.

FanboyNation: What is the best way to prepare or train for Parkour and Free Running?

Michael: Best way to train… I wouldn’t say that one way is better than another. Definitely say getting familiar with your environment. Maybe instead of walking around a wall you’ll go over the wall. Maybe instead of using the door to get through a fence you climb the fence. Just getting really familiar with your environment, like climbing trees, getting down on all fours, just really getting and intimate view of your environment.

FanboyNation: What would you say is the most rewarding thing about Parkour and Free Running?

Michael: The most rewarding thing about free running is that it allows you to do whatever you feel – whatever feels good really. There is no one way to do free running. What we do at Tempest Academy is we teach people the basics of Parkour and Free Running. After they learn those they can use those in any way, shape, or form that they feel and that feels good.”

Be sure to check out Tempest Academy and all of the other attractions at BodyBuilding.com’s TheFitExpo™. BodyBuilding.com’s TheFitExpo™ will be at the Los Angeles Convention Center and doors open at 10:00am.
