Hilarious and Grimey ‘Tales From the Borderlands’ – Review

GameStop, Inc.

Tell Tale Games presents Tales From the Borderlands is another in their choose your own adventure like games. The game focuses on characters Rhys and Fiona who are not part of the main cast in any of the previous games, however they do take place in the same universe and run into some of the main characters of the series. Rhy is a aspiring suit at Hyperion and Fiona is a Pandora native and highly wanted Con Artist. The first episode, or part 1 of 5, of the game shares the story of how these two meet.

I don’t want to share any of the story because the game is pretty much all story that you can alter based in your choices. I’ll go straight into the review. I played on PC, and the biggest drawback was the lack of controller support. It only comes into play in one factor, when you have to button mash. Minus the mouse, the main controls use the WASD movement model and use Q and E as interaction and inventory. During some parts of the game you have to mash the Q button to accomplish the task which is kind of difficult to do efficiently with a ring finger.

Bonerfarts still terrorize Pandora

Bonerfarts still terrorize Pandora

And that’s where my complaint ends. The game is hilarious! It perfectly captures the tone and spirit of the Borderlands franchise without any of the fast paced RPG action. I know that sounds bad, but it’s great in every sense. It provides a depth to the franchise that you pretty much would never get otherwise. It’s like if there was a spin-off of an action movie that took characters who were in the background and made a comedy that happened right around the action.

Vaugh (Hardwick) & Rhys (Baker) get into a predicament.

The cast of the game is stellar, I use stellar because I didn’t want to use “all-star.” Troy Baker, Laura Bailey, Chris Hardwick, Ashely Johnson, and Patrick Warburton to name a few. These are highly recognizeable voices and they deliver astounding performances. I made a choice to sound cocky, and the look on the face of Hardwick’s character, Vaughn, almost made me feel bad about it.  I don’t believe it was motion captured so I don’t want to give too much credit to Hardwick, since I don’t know if the character’s choice to be silent was his or the directors.

The graphics shine in Borderlands’ traditional cell shaded yet intricately detailed environment. From the Mad Max inspired wasteland, to the wild Bonerfarts – I mean Bullymongs (you will understand that if you are a true fan of the series) – Tales From the Borderlands perfectly captures the spirit of the franchise and explores a depth of it that likely would never be explored otherwsise.

Skags are back!

Skags are back!

Tales From the Borderlands is well written, performed, and compiled into a hilariously entertaining interactive story. This choose your own adventure gameplay isn’t for everyone, but if you like the genre or are a fan of the Borderlands franchise, this game is a must play. The game is available on all next gen consoles, Steam, as well mobile on iOS and Android. The first episode (part 1 of 5) is available for free, so there’s really no excuse.

I give Tales From the Borderlands a 9/10 (That Q really keeps it from being perfect)
