Takin’ a Ride in Ecto-1 for ‘Ghostbusters’

Part of updating the Ghostbusters extends beyond assembling a new crew. The Ghostbusters now feature a different set of gadgets and proton packs, including an all new version of their car, Ecto-1. In the 1984 classic, Ecto-1 was an old ambulance repurposed for traversing the streets of New York to aid the quartet of spectral-fighting scientists. The new Ecto-1 is a repurposed hearse, which is lent to the new crew by the uncle of Leslie Jones’ Patty Tolan. It’s one aspect that represents the film’s unique ability to formulate something new out of the old, a new invention with overriding homage to the past. I recently was invited to the Sony Pictures lot to take a look at the new car as well as taking a little ride around the block in Ecto-1.

On a hot summer day in July, I trekked across the entire studio lot from one side to another, where the Ecto-1 was parked outside of Sony Pictures Plaza. Those who are fans of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s The Running Man would recognize the exterior of the building. The 1983 Cadillac Hearse sat outside as various member of the press got to peek around the vehicle.

For a certain subsection of vocal so-called fans who haven’t seen the movie, Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters is the worst kind of pop culture abomination, one that requires outraged comments over the slightest bits of information or speculation surrounding the movie. However, in the real world you don’t see the slightest manifestation of this. People of all stripes stopped to gawk at the new Ecto-1. The folks taking the studio tour stopped at the sight of the car, taking out their phones to take selfies and assorted pictures, and even the security guards got into the action by taking their own set of photos.

The design of the new Ecto-1 compliments this new roster of characters with various stickers to warn the denizens of New York as to the explosive nature of the materials on the car. The warning stating “Not responsible for damage” reinforces the manner with which this new team is learning on the job, not necessarily aware of the potential damages their nuclear arsenal might inflict. One of the nicest little flourishes on the car is the use of aluminum foil along the tech that sits on the car’s roof, as if it’s all been assembled through a process of trial and error before settling one final issue with some homemade solutions.

When it came time to take a ride around the block in Ecto-1, I was stricken by how little work was done to update the interior of the car. Sure, it had a nice sound system installed, but the car’s interior was otherwise untouched from its 33-year-old original. The wood paneled interior looked exactly like something you might’ve seen in your grandmother’s car years ago. Neither was there any work done to the engine. Ecto-1 hasn’t been souped-up; it runs like a car from the ‘80s. The engine doesn’t purr, it growls and rumbles. The car is completely street legal here in California, though the car’s handler wasn’t able to divulge just how expensive the insurance is. As the car roared across the streets of Culver City, lights flashing, pedestrians did what seemingly everyone did when viewing the car – their phones exposed to capture pictures of the vehicles.

Opening this Friday, Ghostbusters is a really fun piece of blockbuster filmmaking, a movie that blends some great ghost busting action with some of the funniest comedy of the year. Ecto-1 is just a minor character in the expansive whole of Paul Feig’s revitalization of the Ghostbusters, and the robust humor and unique new crew will capture the hearts and imaginations of people of all genders and ages with the exception of a certain rage-filled subsection of haters. But some people just hate things that are fun, and whether it’s riding in Ecto-1 or sitting in the theater and laughing non-stop for two hours, Ghostbusters offers nothing but lots and lots of fun.
