Before the first season of 12 Monkeys, Syfy’s adaptation of Terry Gilliams 1995 science fiction film, has reached its conclusion, the powers that be at the network have already deemed it worthy for a second season. From the press release:
“We are absolutely committed to 12 Monkeys, and have been incredibly impressed by the outstanding critical and audience praise the series has earned,” said Dave Howe, Syfy President. “The talent both on and off-screen have delivered a series that has us all on the edge of our seats, providing exactly the smart, exciting storytelling Syfy is known for.”
Jeff Wachtel, President and Chief Content Officer, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, added, 12 Monkeys is a show that has exceeded expectations at every stage. It’s had a great first season creatively, and is building a dedicated audience. We can’t wait to see where – and when! – Terry [Matalas] and Travis [Fickett] will take us next.”
While I haven’t personally had a chance to catch the series, I’ve heard nothing but positive buzz about the adaption. Since many people don’t realize, I must state that 12 Monkeys is an adaptation of an adaptation, Gilliam’s film being based off the short film by Chris Marker, La Jetée. If you’ve never seen La Jetée, it is fantastic. The Syfy series stars Aaron Stanford and Amanda Schull, and it airs on Fridays at 9pm.
