This is it. This is the final trailer for what is (possibly) the year’s most anticipated movie: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams returns to helm what is billed as the final film in the “Skywalker Saga.”
Here’s the highly anticipated trailer;
This is one hell of an action-packed trailer, truly delivering on the promise of an epic and emotional climax of a unique cinematic journey through space and time. And yet, as with practically each of the last few Episodes, there’s absolutely no detail related to the plot. All we know is that the battle versus good and evil rages on with Rey and Kylo Ren at the heart of the struggle. That space battle looks pretty damn epic, and there’s a chance that The Rise of Skywalker could Avengers: Endgame an earnest challenge at the box office.
J.J. is in a unique position as the previous film, The Last Jedi, was critically acclaimed but reviled by an extremely vocal minority. So after the box office disaster of Solo, will Abrams stick with Rian Johnson‘s bold storytelling choices or compromise to appease a loud segment of an agitated fanbase? This is the key question that lingers over The Rise of Skywalker.
Within this trailer is a fascinating blend of past and present, and with few details about what the movie’s actually about leaning heavier on our familiarity of these characters is a potent selling point. As much as it’s great to see the old cast, it’s the new cast that we’ve been on this journey with and this is their great send off. I am eagerly awaiting the film and genuinely admire the way Lucasfilm runs the tightest possible ship preventing anything from leaking out.
Returning to the galaxy far, far away are series icons Carrie Fisher (in her final onscreen appearance), Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and Billy Dee Williams. The new stars of the Star Wars saga returning are Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Lupita Nyong’o, Joonas Suotamo, and Kelly Marie Tran. The trio of Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, and Keri Russell will be entering the galactic wars between light and dark for their first time.
The stakes are high for the fate of the galaxy and J.J. Abrams’ reputation when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker opens in theaters on December 20, 2019.
The one-liner for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker:
