‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’ is $180 Million Fan Film – Review

GameStop, Inc.

Star Wars: The Acolyte‘, is another expensive ‘meh‘ of a series that wastes more potential than it does finances on a dying franchise.

Star Wars: The Acolyte‘, doubles down on South Park’s satire of, “putting a chick in it, making her lame and gay.” A series that had the foundations of a great story with a mostly great cast, turned into $180 million fan film with its poor writing and the blame squarely lays at the feet of showrunner, Leslye Headland.

Every interview conducted was about, “queerness,” and with a June release, it makes sense as a talking point, but quite frankly, that is the least interesting aspect of the story. If it was supposed to be a key factor in its presentation, than ‘Star Wars: The Acolyte‘, fails on that front.

Charlie Barnett’s Yord cannot hide his intellectual pomposity. Wielding the yellow lightsaber as an indication of having balance with the force was not there in how the character was presented. If Yord does not become a Sith by the final four episodes, then there is zero redemption for his character and you will root for the darkside. I will say, he’s in tremendous physical shape and I wish I had his abs.

Amandla Stenberg playing the duel roles of Osha and Mae was entertaining, but the separated twins thing has been done to death. Whether it was, ‘The Prince and the Pauper‘, ‘The Man in the Iron Mask‘, ‘Disney’s The Parent Trap‘ or Jean Claude Van Damm’s ‘Double Impact‘, there needed a new story to tell instead of repeating a generic heroes journey or redemption arc.

Manny Jacinto as Qimir (a smuggler) , Dafne Keen as Jecki Lon (padawan) and Lee Jung-jae as Sol (Jedi Master) being secondary characters instead of the series focus was a waste of their talents, but kept me watching all four episodes.

Sadly, I really wanted to like ‘Star Wars: The Acolyte‘ for its concept, set design and the few interesting characters, but the fan film level of dialogue diminishes the value of, “what could have been.” For the low quality of storytelling presented to the audience, it should have cost no more than a third of the inflated budget.

What’s worse are the throwback lines reminding us of the original Star Wars from the 1970s and 1980s with lines like, “I have a very bad feeling about this.“, “I have to face her alone.” and “I couldn’t save her.” All these lines did was make me think, “Huh, remember when Star Wars was actually enjoyable?

Also, is everyone in a galaxy far, far away an alcoholic? Why the heck do they all have to start every movie or series in a cantina?

Star Wars: The Acolyte‘ is a disappointing reminder of, what was and was could be, but after $180 million, with horrible dialogue and terrible acting direction (notice, I am not blaming the actors), beautiful set designs, costumes and story concept cannot save the series for Disney+.

Star Wars: The Acolyte‘ is a waste of potential in storytelling and continues the decline of Star Wars as fans will lose even more hope in the franchise.
