Skyjacks Part One: The Doctor, Americans and Holes in the Sky

Dr Who 9The year in 1945 and the Americans are in the skies above Iwo Jima, Japan. Aboard the Skyjack lies “Big Momma,” the fictional companion nuclear weapon to “Fat Man” and “Little Boy” of Nagasaki and Hiroshima fame. The end seems near as heavy fire and loss of several crew members makes it appear that the plane will never reach its target; a hole appears in the sky and swallows the plane whole. In another portion of time and space, Clara Oswald awakes in the TARDIS to discover the lights in the spare bedroom are out and the Doctor is nowhere to be found. After pressing a button that should never be pressed, she finds herself falling into thin air, being attacked by a metal creature, and then finding herself among the lost American crew. Clara finds herself in a world of steam and stranded creatures, looking to meet the mysterious “Smith”

Andy Diggle and Eddie Robson work well together to introduce an interesting new world amidst the well-known backdrop of war. World War Two is something that Doctor Who has always covered brilliantly. While we normally see the interaction from Churchill’s eyes and British hearts, the American reader is able to come in on the story from our perspective for once. Clara is kept curious and wide-eyed as always. The Americans are determined in their mission and can-do attitude. I love the idea that there was a missing nuclear bomb known as “Big Momma,” as “Fat Man” and “Little Boy” always seemed to be lacking an explosive woman’s touch.

Andy Kuhn’s artwork makes for an enjoyable experience through the TARDIS. We are shown a glimpse of a bedroom in the TARDIS, the library and even a room made entirely of Legos. One of my favorite details in the artwork is a cup Clara is holding when she goes looking for the Doctor. It is emblazoned with “Get Excited and Make Things”; a clear allusion to the now extremely popular “Keep Calm and Carry On” slogan, which originated in England during World War 2.

Part one in this series has me excited for the three to follow. As a lover of the Steampunk genre, metal creatures and steam powered ships are something I quite enjoy seeing. Thankfully, the comics make it tolerable to wait until November 23rd for the 50th Anniversary television special; much like methadone to a heroin addict working to wean off a sweet sweet drug.
