Shutter #2 Come for the Journey!

GameStop, Inc.

Shutter 2 Cover AShutter #2 opens with contrasts. Kate’s house is quiet and peaceful and her faithful cat-robot has made her some cookies. Outside, there is mayhem. Kate’s self-styled protectors from the last issue have taken her into their ship and are under pursuit by those lawful and less so.

It’s a great way to take in the wonderful new world Joe Keatinge and Leila del Duca have created. In the first three pages alone appear: one cheerful cat robot in an apron; a flying saucer; large, talking rats; a giant bird; the steampunk robot from last issue; some purple ghost-ninja-creatures, also from last issue; a group of Irish lions in a flying car; some ordinary people running through the streets to get out of the chaos (which seems a wise decision on their part); and Kate, unconscious for the moment.

The sheer craziness of the setting is one good reason to read Shutter. Kate is another. Keatinge has created an appealing, active heroine here. Whatever reason she may have had for giving up on adventure, she has kept her instincts and is capable of quick response when it is needed. Also, thanks to her work as a photographer, she has not stayed isolated from the world. She also clearly has some good friends, though we haven’t seen much of them yet; even the cat, who is adorable in its perkiness has only shown up relatively briefly. A supporting cast is always welcome, and it looks like we’ll be seeing more of these.

There’s also a good, ongoing plot unfolding here, with plenty of questions: Who are Kate’s siblings? Why was she never told about them? Why did Kate’s father leave them and when? Why did Kate stop adventuring? How is Kate’s work as a photographer going to fit in here?

As mentioned earlier, del Duca has created a busy, crazy world full of unexpected creatures and vistas. I find myself going back to look at the panels many times just to see what I have missed. Del Duca also keeps Kate, both older and slightly lost Kate and younger, enthusiastic Kate, appealing and expressive, a real young woman who is a part of the world, who can be hurt by it, but who also has moments of wonder.

Shutter is an ongoing series, and it’s well worth jumping on board for the journey.
