shadowman 7Shadowman #7 is the continuing story of New Orleans native Jack Boniface. Taken over by dark energy, Jack is now the Shadowman; the last hope for defense between the reality we know and the terrifying parallel world, the Deadside. Shadowman’s assistants in this war are Dox and Alyssa. Known as “Abettors” the two are members of an organization designed to help the Shadowman. In this instance, they are responsible for helping Shadowman as he works to defeat a powerful necromancer named Master Darque and a shady group known as the Brethren.

We find Shadowman in Cypress Grove cemetery. A forgotten deity known as Baron Samedi has returned to earth in the form of one of his worshipers. Shadowman and Alyssa struggle against the dead creatures Samedi has called to hold them until Dox arrives with an enchanted bullet. Thought unharmed by the shot, Samedi is quickly overtaken by Shadowman. The threat of having his head removed from his body quickly changes his mind and turns Samedi from a threat into an ally. Samedi leads Shadowman to the Bretheren Stronghold in an attempt to find Darque and defeat him. Disagreeing with Shadowman’s alliance with Samedi, Dox and Alyssa search to find their own way to the Deadside to help defeat Darque. Using a Devilsheart- a mythical root-like object- Dox works to separate his body from his soul and enter the Deadside at entirely the wrong time.

Justin Jordan’s story is highly entertaining and refreshing in a world full of superheroes and hipster comics trying too hard to be the next artsy thing. He skillfully crafts an antihero who straddles too worlds, albeit reluctantly. Using the lore of the loa was actually a very cool thing to see in a comic book. The Bretheren are authentically creepy; when you die you just become another soldier in the ranks after all. A random monkey creature that assists Darque acts as a voice of reason, but also adds a bit of calming levity to the hell like spaces that the artist create for the story.

Neil Edwards and Matt Ryan do an excellent job of keeping the story grim and gory with their pencil and ink team. Bones breaking through flesh, hooks through spines and souls in torment are just a few of the items they were drafted to bring to the page. The team is equally gifted as representing Dox and Alyssa as they are with the gore and torment of the Deadside; well-crafted and precise pen and ink work abound. Brian Reber also does a great work with keeping his colors creepy enough for the story, but not over doing it.

Shadowman #7 from Valiant press holds your attention as well as a perfectly placed devil hook through the spine; it holds you, shakes you, and won’t let go until the story is done with you.
