SDCC 2016 – Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV Panel

GameStop, Inc.

KingsglaiveOn July 23rd, at San Diego Comic Con, Square Enix held a panel showcasing the upcoming companion film to Final Fantasy XV, Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV. Moderated by IGN’s Marty Sliva, the panel featured director Takeshi Nozue, Square Enix localization editor and lead writer Dan Inoue, Libertus’ voice and motion capture actor Liam Mulvey, Crowe’s motion capture model Andrea Tivadar and Square Enix’s U.S. Product Marketing Director Mat Kishimoto.

When asked what fans can expect from Kingsglaive, Nozue stated the movie will be something fans of Final Fantasy can enjoy, but at its core, is a fast paced action movie that non-fans can enjoy as well. In regards to the relation between the game and the movie, Nozue said that both share the theme between father and son, but where the game is told from Noctis’ perspective, Kingsglaive is a parallel story from the king’s eyes. Next, the crowd was shown a behind the scenes video of the film’s three main stars, Sean Bean, Aaron Paul, and Lena Headey in the recording studio recording the film’s dialogue.

The next question the director was asked was about the challenges of creating a story from absolutely nothing and bringing it to life in a fleshed out CGI world. Nozue stated that there were three challenges he faced while creating the film. The first and biggest challenge was that English is not his first language. He had to work carefully with the localization team to build this English-speaking world from the ground up. The second challenge dealt with the expressions on the character’s faces. Since this isn’t a cutscene but a full-fledged movie, more care and effort are put into the details of the characters and the environments. Since they wanted the film to be released before the game, the final challenge was that they had to do all of this within the span of one year. Both of the actors were asked what it is like to make a film with absolutely nothing. They said it was similar to theatre in the way that in both forms you do have to rely on your imagination in order to act the scene. In order to do the motion capture, they were required to wear a large motion capture suit which made moving a tad difficult. In theatre, you have to use larger, elaborate movements to accommodate having to act to the back of the theatre and when filming movies, the acting is a lot more subtle. When acting with the motion capture equipment on, you have to find that balance between the two. Following the question, the audience was treated to another behind the scenes clip featuring both actors going through the motion capture process, from facial scanning, to building the model, to finishing the final result.

Up next, the crowd was treated to a special message from Aaron Paul. He talked about how he wishes he could be there and talked about working on the movie before introducing a brand new trailer for the film. According to Marty Sliva, the trailer barely scratches the surface of the film.

After the trailer, the panel moved onto questions submitted through facebook and twitter. The first question asked if Noctis or any other character from the game will appear in the film. Nozue did not want to confirm if Noctis would appear in the film but stated the pair will share some characters including Luna, Ravus and a host of bad guys. The actors were both asked what it felt like when they got the call that they were in the film. Mulvey said that there was no info at first as to who wanted them for a CGI film. However, when they were told that it was Square Enix that nothing quickly became excitement but they had no clue that it would be a Final Fantasy project. Mat Kishimoto was asked if fans should be worried about seeing the movie before the game. Mat replied that there while there are shared elements in both and that while they do run side by side, there are no spoilers for the game in the movie. The final question asked why they chose to get the three larger named actors. Nozue said that when looking for actors they have to ask “Do they fit the role?” Nix is an outsider and Aaron Paul plays an outsider really well. In his mind, Sean Bean is a king and as in some of her other roles, Lena Headey has a royal grace and a strong core, which is what they wanted for Luna. There was always a chance that they would say no, but they were hoping with fingers crossed. Mat added that it probably helped that Aaron Paul’s brother is a big Final Fantasy fan.

To close the panel, the audience was treated to another surprise announcement from Aaron, where he introduced to the crowd, the opening 10 minutes of the film. At the end of the panel, they announced that Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV would be released digitally on August 30th and on DVD and Blu-Ray on October 4th.
