Cvr Boy GirlLove at first sight can happen anytime or anywhere, but it can disappear just as quickly.  It is even harder to find love when androids are supplanting humans. Travis has just met a girl named Charley at a party and the instant they kissed he felt a connection. Their tête-à-tête is disturbed and Charley disappears. Travis manages to track her down in a semi-stalker-esque fashion and persuade her to go on a date. The only caveat is that Charley has to leave in twenty-four hours for her new job and she happens to be an android. Travis doesn’t allow that to stop them from having fun as they try to find romance and run away from authorities.

It sounds like a typical whirlwind romance with an android tossed in to hook readers, right? Yes and no. Travis and Charley thwart authorities at every turn, feeding off the adrenaline and electric high (in Charley’s case). Their attraction to each other grows at every close call, but at the same time so does the ethical ramifications of self-determination Travis questions Charley’s pull to leave in twenty-four hours. He forces her to question if it is right for someone to choose her life for her just as she forces him to confront what he would like to do with his own future. Travis has his own worries about graduating from college and finding a job.

The graphic novel does follow closely to a typical romantic comedy plot, despite the philosophical questions about humanity vs. robot. The questions raised are thought provoking, but they have been asked and answered in more sci-fi related stories. The romantic angle is interesting though and Jamie S. Rich, the author, does manage to set his work apart from most boring ronabce.. There is more than one twist in the story. Revealing any more details about the plot would ruin its effect, but upon reading it a whole new level of questions come into play.   Readers are forced to change their paths of thinking and re-evaluate the entire graphic novel.

The art is deliciously slim, sleek, and clean. Futuristic conceptions have changed since the advent of Apple products. Natalie Nourigat’s drawings remind me of a plausible future built around the compact, sleekness found in Apple. While the landscape has changed in the future, she still retains many familiar sights that lets readers know her future isn’t too far off.

A Boy and a Girl is an intriguing graphic novel and its light storyline will appeal to those who aren’t hardcore sci-fi fans.
