‘Santas in the Barn’ is the Jolliest Reality Competition Show Ever – Series Premiere Review

GameStop, Inc.

Review in a Tweet: “#SantasintheBarn is wholsesome family fun”

Show Description:”This winter, America will brace itself for the ultimate Christmas competition with Santas in the Barn, the search for the nation’s Best Santa. In this heart-warming holiday special event, ten Santas from across the country are brought to live at the ultimate Christmas fantasy camp where they will compete in an array of over-the-top Christmas-themed challenges meant to discover who most lives the “Santa Way.” While living out their Santa dreams, these would-be Kris Kringles will vote on who most exemplifies the Christmas spirit, with the last one standing winning $100,000 and the title of America’s Best Santa!”

As an avid avoider of reality television, I really tried not to like this show. I associate things in a barn as a network excuse to create a show without minorities. That’s blunt, but in general a rule that holds up. Anyway, I was immediately proven wrong. There were ethnic and other than male Santas right off the bat, then they immediately put Santas against each other to fill up a sleigh with gifts then race to a North Pole. It’s impossible not to smile. All the contestants are very joyful and don’t have that unnecessary aggressive competitive, minus Santa John who is annoyingly competitive. You can’t be intimidating as a Santa, you either look dumb or you pull it off and ruin Santa. I really want Santa John out of the competition. But it wouldn’t be a reailty competition show without one of those guys. I mean he starts setting up an alliance immediately after the first show down. In the beginning of the show, they take a Santa-cratic Oath to be a good Santa (person), so if a competitive nob like Santa John wins it kind of sets a horrible message for what Santa is supposed to be like.

I think what gives Santas in the Barn an edge is that most of the contestants want to be good people, minus Santa John. The show is chock full of reality television cliches, but the Santa theme really helps and gives it a refereshing take as the contestants don’t seem hell bent on eliminating eachother. I do feel the host Jon Gabrus is under utilized, as his snarky one liners land every time. My main concern with the show how traumatizing it could be for kids to see a bunch of Santas have drama with each other. Being Santa themed, it should it naturally has family appeal. Being a reality competition show, it naturally breeds Jerry Springer like behavior which I know is horrible for kids to see. Not to go to deep into the subject, but let’s just say I used to host a Jerry Springer like show at recess until I was taken off the air.

Santas in the Barn for the most part brings nice wholesome Santa Fun with a small lumps of reality television coal. If you’re looking for a fun Christmas themed show to watch Santas do mildly intriguing and somewhat comical tasks, this show is for you.

Santas in the Barn Premieres tonight at 9:00PM ET/PT on truTV.

The Verdict

Santas in the Barn for the most part brings nice wholesome Santa Fun with a small lumps of reality television coal. If you’re looking for a fun Christmas themed show to watch Santas do mildly intriguing and somewhat comical tasks, this show is for you.
