The 18th Annual ‘Santa Claus Conquers the Martians‘ proves that the Maverick Theater conquers live performances.
For nearly two decades, the Maverick Theater has performed an adaptation of the Pia Zadora 1964 classic sci-fi Christmas movie, ‘Santa Claus Conquers the Martians‘. In its 18th year, ‘Santa Claus Conquers the Martians‘ continues to be a sold out show, with 2024 being no exception!
Adapted for the stage by Brian Newell and Nick McGee, with Newell directing, ‘Santa Claus Conquers the Martians‘ follows the tale of Jolly Ol’ St. Nick (Leonard Joseph Dunham) as he is kidnapped from the North Pole by King of the Martians, Kimar (Jaycob Hunter) and his villainous sidekick Voldar (Nathan Makaryk) to bring happiness, laughter and toys to the children of Mars. Kimar, being a good father wants nothing more for his daughter, Girmar (Leah Feliciano, who replaces Zardora’s role) to simply go to sleep. However, Momar (Becky Jones) convinces them that children need to learn to laugh and play, for the betterment of their world.
As the Martians apprehend Santa Claus, two small “children“, Billy (Rob Downs) and his sister, Betty (Hailey Tweter) are taken away from their parents…and Betty’s husband (you’ll understand when you see the show) as they head off to the red planet to save Santa and Christmas.
Rounding out the incredibly hilarious cast are Kara Gee who portrayed Rigna — and fully committed to that candy cane bit, and everyone’s favorite robot since Robbie, Torg, portrayed by Joe Sanders. Gee, Hunter, Makaryk, Downs and Tweter have this chemistry and impeccable adlibbing skills that I know when seeing their names on the bill, the audience is in for a good time. Hunter and Makaryk especially committed to the notion of, “yes/and” when it comes to improv, including their audience interaction. ‘Santa Claus Conquers the Martians‘ is a wildly good time, which each performance being different from one night to the next…just the way we like it at the Maverick Theater.
The Maverick Theater has yet to disappoint with their adaptations or original performances and for those looking for a fun, night of laughs, the he Maverick Theater is where you will find them.
