‘Rule Breakers’ Mahboob Sisters Create First All-Female Afghani Robotics Team – Interview

GameStop, Inc.

Angel Studios latest biopic ‘Rule Breakers’ follows sisters Roya and Elaha Mahboob in their creation of the first all-female Afghani robotics team.

We had the privilege of speaking with Roya Mahboob and her sister, co-writer Elaha Mahboob, of ‘Rule Breakers‘, a powerful film that tells the true story of Afghanistan’s first all-female robotics team. These young women, led by Elaha, defied incredible odds to pursue their dreams of education and independence, despite the harsh and oppressive rule of the Taliban. The film showcases their resilience, courage, and the transformative power of education.

“Elaha’s story is one of incredible strength and determination,” said Brandon Purdie, Executive Vice President of Theatrical Distribution and Brand Development at Angel Studios. “’Rule Breakers‘ is a celebration of those who challenge the status quo, pushing against societal limitations and fighting for their right to shape their own future. As we mark International Women’s Day, the film serves as a reminder that there are systems and structures that seek to control and silence voices, but some rules are made to be broken. It’s time to stand up for freedom, and this story exemplifies that spirit.”

Rule Breakers‘ releases on March 7, 2025—just one day before International Women’s Day on March 8—could not be more fitting. International Women’s Day is a time to recognize the remarkable achievements of women around the world, and ‘Rule Breakers‘ embodies the essence of this celebration. It’s about women who push through barriers, defy the odds, and break the rules in order to create a better future for themselves and others.

Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Bill Guttentag and produced by Laura Overdeck, ‘Rule Breakers‘ is more than just a movie—it’s an inspiring call to action. Based on the real-life experiences of Elaha and her team, it’s a moving tribute to the power of education, determination, and solidarity. Their journey to create a robotics team while facing unimaginable challenges is nothing short of extraordinary.

As the release date approaches, audiences worldwide are set to be inspired by this powerful story of courage and resilience. ‘Rule Breakers‘ is a film that reminds us all of the importance of fighting for what we believe in and the unyielding power of hope.

Rule Breakers‘ comes to theaters on Friday, March 7, 2025, from Angel Studios.
