A Refreshing New Take on Familiar Territory – Reviewing Steampunk Battlestar Galactica #2 (of 4)

GameStop, Inc.

Cover for Steampunk Battlestar Galactica #2It’s the little things things like Tony Lee introducing a “Babbage server” into Battlestar Galactica or Ananke giving Apollo a pointed beard and Sheba the garb of a space-pirate that make Steampunk Battlestar Galactica fun.

Steampunk Battlestar Galactica: 1880 was an enjoyable run before that point, with everyone’s roles switched around, their costumes changed for elaborate steampunk clothes, and pirates chasing our heroes through the asteroids, but when it turned out that Baltar ran his Cylonic’s instructions through a “Babbage server named Lu-C-Fer”? That’s when this really clicked.

Steampunk Battlestar Galactica #2 begins with Archduke Adama fretting about sending Starbuck with Athena in to rescue Apollo from the mines where he is being held prisoner. Starbuck, meanwhile, has managed to irritate the pirate queen, Sheba and Cassipia, to the point where they are literally gunning for him. It is fortunate, then, that “crown prince” Apollo, true to form, is not sitting and waiting quietly for rescue and is taking action of his own.

Lee writes a lively story putting people into new roles while keeping their original Battlestar Galactica characters in mind: Starbuck as a swashbuckling captain who irritates and flirts with pirate queens is a reasonable and enjoyable change. Count Iblis as a former employee of Baltar’s is an intriguing switch, which I hope will be developed more.

The art in these is truly enjoyable. Aneke gives the fleet a steampunk twist, redesigning the ships just enough and, of course, giving everyone fine new costuming and hairstyles. The Cyclonics don’t look so very different, although they have a few nuts and bolts that were not there before.

There is no summary of what went before, but this is early enough in the run that new readers should have no problem jumping in and following the story. It’s a good, light read worth picking up. Steampunk Battlestar Galactica: 1880 comes out today, September 24, 2014 from Dynammite Comics.
