Review – ‘Bracket Games: Three Fourths Home’ Leaves You Wanting More

GameStop, Inc.

02You sit upon your car at your grandparent’s barn in the middle of a cornfield in Nebraska. It’s getting dark. There clouds are coming and a storm is approaching. You need to get home. You get in your car and drive. Three Fourths Home is a visual short story by Bracket Games.
In Three Fourths Home, you assume the role of a young college student named Kelly. The game is divided into two parts, the main story and the epilogue. Both of these offer a glimpse into a moment in Kelly’s life and the interaction with her family. The main story takes place in a cornfield in Nebraska as Kelly is trying to get home before the storm sets in. The epilogue takes place at a bus stop in Minnesota while Kelly talks with her mom.

Gameplay, Graphics and Audio
Being a visual short story, there isn’t much in terms of gameplay. Playing on the Playstation 4, the square button is used to advance the dialogue and X is used to choose Kelly’s dialogue choice. R2 (and L2 in the epilogue) is used to moved the character. That’s pretty much it. During the main story, you must keep Kelly driving in order to advance the story. The only problem with that, which might be because of the triggers on the Playstation controller, your hand starts to cramp up. I hand to switch hands a few times while playing.

While the gameplay isn’t all that, the well written dialogue is enough to keep you interested enough to finish and the multiple dialogue options lead to branching conversations giving the game some degree of replayability. Finishing the main story unlocks additional reading in the form of in-game short stories written by Kelly’s brother, Ben. Graphically the game is also simple. The minimalistic, 3 tone scenes do their job of showing the story. Most of the time, however, you aren’t looking at the graphics but reading the story so, in a way, it makes sense not to have too much emphasis on the graphics. I can’t speak for playing without headphones, but with them, the audio comes in nice and crisp making it sound as if you are actually driving through a thunderstorm.

All-in-all, Three Fourths Home is a well written story, that like an ordinary book that you may enjoy, might have you going back to it every now and again. The only problem I have with it is that, because it is so well written and because it shows you only a few small glimpses into Kelly’s life, it just leaves you wanting more. If Bracket Games made a full fledged visual novel that is as equally well written, I would buy it in a heartbeat without question.

Three Fourths Home
  • 9/10
    Story - 9/10
  • 5/10
    Gameplay - 5/10
  • 6/10
    Mechanics - 6/10

The Verdict

While extremely well written, the two short glimpses into Kelly’s life just leave you wishing there was more to the title.
