H.E.R.O. Unit is a text based game developed by a group of three friends for iOS and Android devices. The main idea for the game is that you assume the role of a 911 dispatcher as you pick up a variety of calls and try to help the caller through the situation.
STORY
There isn’t really one central core story. Instead, each call that you take is a story itself. You, as a 911 dispatcher, take calls from individuals. Each call is it’s own self contained story with no connection to each other. At least not that I have seen. The calls range from a mall heist, to domestic disputes, to crazy people off their meds. It is up to you to make sure these calls end with a happy ending. According to the developers, each call, while being fictional, are based on real 911 calls and events.
GAMEPLAY AND MECHANICS
H.E.R.O. Unit is a text based game. You read everything. If you don’t like reading, then this is probably not the game for you. It is also basically a choose your own adventure game. At certain points during the call, you will be asked to choose one of a few options. Each option branches that call out even further. Because of this, each call has multiple endings. Maybe you save a wife from being killed by her husband, but you might not be able to stop a woman from committing suicide. You can, however, replay each call to try and see each ending. This can only be done when you have no calls waiting. Due to how the game is structured, this makes the game easy to pick up and play in small bursts. After each call, news stories are unlocked summarizing the call. There are no real sounds, music or graphics but for this game, they aren’t really necessary.
OVERALL
Honestly, this game isn’t going to be for everyone. I happen to like text based games, so this was right up my alley. My biggest complaint is that there are quite a bit of grammatical errors. Not so much spelling errors, but more so how things are worded, while still getting the point across, are not worded properly. To a lesser extent, the fact that there is no central connecting story makes the game good only on short burst. It is fine for this style of game, but I never find my self playing for than two or three calls at a time before moving on to something else. It is however only 99 cents. There are worst things (and games) you can buy for more money. If you want a thing to help you waste some time, check out H.E.R.O. Unit.

The Verdict
H.E.R.O. Unit is a good game to help you waste some time. The lack of a central, core story might not want to make some play it in long bouts.
