Resort to Love Review – Is a detrimentally messy situation that is handled incredibly tidily, a little too tidily

Netflix has a pretty impressive collection of romantic comedies like Always Be My Maybe and Love Guaranteed and now Resort to Love. Resort to Love stars Christina Millian as Erica, a struggling up-and-coming musician whose big break fell through because her collaboration partner decided not to release the music. To pile on, Erica has to take a job at a luxurious resort as a lounge singer. This leads her to dwell on her failed engagement that happened only a year ago, which had a lot to do with her devotion to her music career. It is all kinds of bad for Erica. At the resort, Erica is relaxing on the beach when a person drowning screams for help. She dives in to try and rescue him, but he ends up taking her down as well. Luckily, Erica awakens in the arms of Caleb (Sinqua Wells). They have a moment, and Erica returns to the resort feeling happy and positive. That is, until she runs into her ex-fiance Jason (Jay Pharoah), who is here for his wedding with his new fiance Beverly (Christiani Pitts). A wedding, as the resort’s singer, would have to sing for. What happens next is a weekend full of awkward situations, confronting romantic history and emotions, and self-discovery.

Resort to Love features a stellar cast and a situation that is rife with possibilities that are equally likely to be hilarious or horrifying. Which is to say, a rich vein for comedy. Christina Milian is a wonderful lead, and her experience in the genre is apparent as she perfectly hits all the right notes of a distressed romantic comedy lead. Sinqua Wells plays the impossibly perfect love interest that is infallible to the entire situation. Jay Pharoah gets an opportunity to display his emotional range, though I feel his comedic expertise was criminally underutilized. And Christiani Pitts gets to bring to life one of the most incomprehensibly emotionally mature people to have existed in Romantic Comedy history.

Resort to Love checks the boxes of the rom-com genre but doesn’t feel to ever push or exceed them. However, it does supersede expectations by being very mature and understanding of the entire situation. While philosophically and morally ideal, and unquestionably promoting healthier values and role models for dealing with the mess of romance, it was at the cost of comedy.

Romantic comedies tend to ride the line of drama and comedy, usually to create a cohesive hilarious contrast. Resort to Love leans more into the drama and attempts to heighten the comedy that exists organically from the situations, which hits and miss and makes much of it feel forced despite being logical. The film feels it would have been better served to be a drama that allowed the natural comedy play, rather than a romantic comedy with grounded and incredibly emotionally mature reactions. It’s a romantic comedy with all straight players and no funny players that delivers a noticeably weak comedic punch.

Resort to Love has all the components for a truly great romantic comedy, but unfortunately does not bring them all together. It is a lot like having the highest quality ingredients to make a cake, but it kind of tastes like a box cake that would probably be better as cookies. While it is an enjoyable film with a stellar cast and promotes a much healthier and ideal level of emotional maturity, it makes for a forgettable romantic comedy. My Resort to Love review gets a 2.5/5
