The HIGH-ly Hilarious ‘Reefer Madness The Musical‘ Extends its run through October 27, 2024 at the Historical Whitley Theatre.
The raucous fun of ‘Reefer Madness The Musical‘ continues to captivate audiences with its irreverent humor and high-energy performances. As this musical adaptation brings a new, comedic twist to the original anti-marijuana message, extending its run through October 27, 2024.
Produced by Kristen Bell, Christian Campbell, Alan Cumming, and stars a talented ensemble featuring J. Elaine Marcos as Sally DeBain, Bryan Daniel Porter as the Lecturer and Jack, Anthony Norman as Jimmy Harper, Thomas Dekker as Ralph Wiley, Darcy Rose Byrnes as Mary Lane and Emily Goglia as Mae Coleman, this production of ‘Reefer Madness The Musical‘ takes viewers on a wild ride through the exaggerated chaos and hysteria surrounding the film’s infamous drug panic. With a book by Kevin Murphy and Dan Studney, and a score that includes catchy tunes by Murphy and Studney, the show is a hilarious satire that effectively captures the essence of its source material while providing a fresh, entertaining experience.
As wonderful as all these performances were, I could have done without the sacrilege scene of a Jazzy Jesus, with a golden microphone, portrayed by the wonderfully talented Rory O’Malley, trying to convince the drug addled stoners to get, “High on God.” However, beyond this aspect of the show, the musical was quite phenomenal.
Based on the infamous 1936 film of the same name, ‘Reefer Madness The Musical‘ follows the chaotic fallout when two innocent, clean-cut kids, Jimmy and Mary, fall victim to the perceived dangers of marijuana. The narrative plunges them into a whirlwind of jazz, scandalous behavior, and sensationalized violence, all played for comedic effect. The musical cleverly amplifies the film’s original hysteria into a larger-than-life spectacle.
The immersive experience is enhanced by the “Reefer Den” and the “Victory Garden” restaurant, which let guests dive fully into the world of the musical before and after the show. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to enjoy food and cocktails, and the after-party offers an eclectic mix of musical entertainment and unexpected surprises. As seldom as I drink, I highly recommend, “The Choking Stench of Sin,” bourbon based cocktail, putting a marvelous spin on an Old Fashioned.
Director and choreographer Spencer Liff has crafted a visually stunning and energetic production, showcasing his impressive talent and past accolades. The creative team, including musical director David Lamoureux and the accomplished cast, delivers a performance that is both spirited and polished.
