Vampires, BBQ, and Blood! What a awesome combination from Skybound’s Redneck #2. You’ll be pleasantly surprised when reading this comic as there are lots of moving parts that make this story arc interesting and unique. Writer Donny Cates (Image Comics’ God Country) and artist Lisadro Estherren immerse you into Sulphur Springs, where the BBQ is delicious and the blood flows like wine. If Robert Rodriguez wrote a comic, this would be it! Let’s get into a brief synopsis:
“Death and destruction have come to Sulphur Springs! With the murder of one of their own, the vampiric Bowmans are ready to wage war on anyone in their path. But will Bartlett be able to get to the bottom of things before the whole town explodes? Donny Cates and Lisadro Estherren bring you the next chapter in this blood-soaked, Southern-fried Gothic masterpiece!” – Image Comics
Here’s the thing, we’re all use to reading comics that look crisp and clean like DC’s Justice League or Marvel’s The Avengers. To tell you truth, that is not this comic. Which is great because Image is where a different breed of artist can rise. That is the case with Lisadro Estherren’s art, his style is a narrow and unique feature like Jeff Lemire’s Illustration, which is a good thing in my opinion. It allows you to submerge yourself into the story and feel like no other art belongs in this comic.
Now, for the story. Donny Cates has a way of pulling you in with this comic. You start off with the death of a character which will throw you for a loop. After that, you’ll keep flipping the pages wonder what will happen next. This is not only a great comic but is also a breath of fresh air in a cookie cutter industry. Not only is Cates doing a great job here but he’s double dipping in Image Comics with God Country. So if you enjoyed this issue, go pick up God Country as well.
All-in-all, this was a great issue. You’ll have fun and want this on your pull list indefinitely. Should you pick this up? Yes, but try to get yourself #1 so you can really tell whats going on. Is this a good jumping on point? You’ll get the gist of what happened in the issue. Was this the best issue so far? No idea but I’m willing to find out!
