‘Queen & Slim’ Out Today on 4K and Blu-ray

GameStop, Inc.

What started off as a completely drab first date in Ohio, a black couple Slim (Daniel Kaluuya) and Queen (Jode Turner-Smith), are pulled over for a minor traffic infraction. The highly tense situation ends with tragic results, as Slim kills the police officer in self-defense. Terrified and in fear for their lives, Slim, a retailer, and Queen, a criminal defense lawyer, are forced to go on the run. However the events are captured on video and goes viral. The couple unwittingly become a symbol of trauma, terror, grief and pain for people across the country.

Queen & Slim is definitely a white-knuckle watch. The film comments on race, racism, perception and the human condition. Net everything is ever black and white (no pun intended), but we watch as the couple not only grow in love, but understanding of each other’s lives and the tragic mishaps of life.

The only thing I can think of is that most films that feature black people either have to be over the top comedies or tragic and dark struggles. We almost never…at least to my knowledge get black Rom-Coms. As great as a movie like Queen & Slim is, just once I want to see a movie that has an all black cast, doing everyday things. Not every movie has to be a commentary on race, but I am glad that Queen & Slim is because this is a powerful picture that needs to be watched more than once. The connection created between Kaluuya and Turner-Smith is so strong you almost forget this is a movie and not eavesdropping in on a real life situation and that makes for a great flick!
