Quantum and Woody #12 is finally here. Confronted by a giant amalgamated creature claiming to possess the brains of Thomas Edison, Quantum and Woody must quickly decide whether to destroy it and E.R.A. or to listen to what this strange creature is asking. Woody has lost Sixty; she is now working with a volunteer organization and after Woody’s cheating spell is done with the relationship. Feeling like he has nothing to go back to, Woody is ready to hear out the organization responsible for his father’s death. But, Thomas Edison creature has surprising news; the goat that Eric and Woody have been carrying around with them holds the back up memories of their father.
James Asmus, as always, makes me laugh hysterically and then feel guilty for my sense of humor. His constant pop culture references and action sequences give the comic a Community feel, while still having that Saturday Morning Cartoon adventure style. The artwork in Issue #12 of Quantum and Woody may have traumatized me, in all the best ways. Combo Edison is just creepy enough to cross into nightmares. However, the brief interlude with the E.R.A. members as tiny children was that type of creepy cute that stays on track, but just barely. Quantum and Woody as teenagers in their Senior year photos were laugh out loud funny. Wilfredo Torres, Erica Henderson and Joseph Cooper all worked on this issue, and the slightly differing art styles add to the Quantum and Woody allure, rather than take away. There is even a brief moment of fourth wall discussion where it is pointed out that maybe next time only one artist will work on the book.
Issue #12 of Quantum and Woody is a satisfying place to rest before the arrival of our beloved characters in The Delinquents #1. The Delinquents will be a crossover series with Valiant’s property Archer and Armstrong that appears in August of this year.
