The Punisher is coming back to Netflix, despite Marvel’s strong denouncement.
When the highly anticipated season two of Daredevil hit Netflix people were curious to see how Jon Bernthal would be as the murderous vigilante Frank Castle. He quickly established that he was the best Punisher yet to hit the screen for many people. Easily the best parts of the season revolved around the Punisher‘s story arc, Bernthal played him as a relentless force of violence that the audience could actually feel empathy for.
Then the rumors of a possible spin-off started making the rounds on social media, flying as fast and loose as the bullets fired from the Castle‘s many guns. These rumors were soundly denounced by none other than Marvel TV Vice President Jeph Loeb, stating in an interview with Digital Spy, “I think that’s something that people are speculating on, as opposed to something that’s actually happening.” We all thought our hopes were dashed, and that we might have seen the last of Bernthal’s Punisher.
But like the devil of Hell’s Kitchen have no fear true believers, as Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that Frank Castle will rise again in his own series on the streaming service with Hannibal executive producer and writer Steve Lightfoot as showrunner. Shortly after EW brought us this great news, Netflix debuted its first teaser for the upcoming series, the sixth Marvel series to stream on the platform. It is very brief, but that’s what a teaser is supposed to be.
