‘Peter Pan‘ Soars at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts with Nolan Almeida in the title role, a rarity for this musical performance.
Peter Pan (Nolan Almedia) and the Lost Boys soar in ‘Peter Pan’ at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts now through August, 18, 2024.
The Segerstrom Center for the Arts, latest production of ‘Peter Pan‘ is a splendid spectacle that redefines the magic of live theatre. Running from August 6 through August 18, 2024, this national tour, directed by the Emmy Award-winning Lonny Price, offers an engaging experience that captivated the opening night audience. This being a particularly (and possibly a not-so coincidental) exciting tie-in to this weekend’s Disney D23 Expo and Disneyland just up the road, serving as the perfect prelude to a weekend of Disney magic.
From the moment the show begins, it becomes clear that this is not your typical ‘Peter Pan‘. Unlike the Disney animated feature, this production combines the Mickey Mouse adaptation with J.M. Barrie’s classic tale with a dash of 21st Century technology (social media influencers are a thing in this version), blending innovative set designs and transformative staging that truly transports the audience to Neverland.
The set design, crafted by Anna Louizos, is a marvel of theatrical ingenuity. The transformation between the Darling children’s bedroom, the whimsical Neverland, and the ominous Jolly Roger left me awestruck. The bedroom scene starts with a cozy, intimate atmosphere, which swiftly morphs into the vibrant, adventurous world of Neverland, complete with lush forests and mystical creatures. The Jolly Roger is equally impressive, with its detailed pirate ship evoking both awe and trepidation. Each scene change is executed with seamless precision, making it feel like you’re stepping into a new world with every transition.
Peter Pan (Nolan Almedia) and Wendy (Hawa Kamar) in the Darling’ nursery in ‘Peter Pan’ at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts now through August, 18, 2024.
The production’s casting choices further elevate this remarkable experience. Seventeen-year-old Nolan Almeida brings a refreshing take to the role of Peter Pan, embodying both the youthful exuberance and boundless energy required for the role. Almeida’s performance is a highlight, drawing praise from audiences who were surprised in seeing a male lead in this iconic role—a rarity that has sparked much intrigue among theatre enthusiasts seated in my vicinity.
Cody Garcia is illuminus as the dastardly Captain Hook. His portrayal of the infamous pirate is both modern, humorous, yet enraging, especially after throwing Michael’s teddy bear overboard, proving that a great villain is crucial to the success of any hero’s journey. Garcia’s performance provides a perfect counterbalance to Almeida’s Peter Pan, creating a dynamic and compelling confrontation that drives the narrative forward.
The production also shines with its younger cast members, particularly Hawa Kamara as Wendy Darling and Raye Zaragoza as Tiger Lily. Kamara’s debut performance as Wendy is marked by a charismatic presence and a beautiful voice that resonated with the audience. Zaragoza’s portrayal of Tiger Lily is equally impressive; her performance blends musical talent with an enchanting stage presence, adding depth to the role as the production paid tribute to the first nations that inhibited these lands.
One of the most delightful aspects of this production is how it engages with the audience. The young cast members are so vibrant and energetic that they had adults in the audience responding to them, creating a lively and immersive atmosphere. This interactive quality makes the show a hit not just with children but the children with back and knee pain as well.
This iteration ‘Peter Pan‘ is a triumph of theatrical design and storytelling. The set transformations are a testament to the creative vision of Lonny Price and his team, showcasing a breathtaking blend of artistry and innovation. For those heading to the Disney D23 Expo or spending time at Disneyland, this production is a perfect complement, offering a fresh and magical perspective on a timeless story.
‘Peter Pan‘ runs from now through August 18, 2024, at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts.

Summary
The Segerstrom Center for the Arts’ ‘Peter Pan‘ will make you feel like you can fly! Its spectacular set design, remarkable performances, and engaging storytelling delivers an unforgettable theatrical experience that will leave you both enchanted and exhilarated.
Worst production I’ve ever been to. Left at intermission… it was difficult to sit through it that long… $300 down the drain… oh well.
