From DreamWorks Animation – creators of How to Train Your Dragon and The Wild Robot – comes the canine crime-fighting film adaptation of Dav Pilkey’s beloved literary phenomenon: Dog Man. The story follows a heroic police dog and his human officer owner who are injured in the line of duty. A wild surgery fuses the two together, creating the unique and lovable character, Dog Man! As Dog Man learns to embrace his new identity and seeks to impress his Chief (voiced by Lil Rel Howery, Get Out), he faces the villainous Petey the Cat (voiced by Pete Davidson, Saturday Night Live), who has a sinister plan to clone himself and create an evil kitten. Along the way, Dog Man’s unlikely bond with the kitten reveals the power of family to transform even the fiercest foes.
Directed and written by Peter Hastings, known for his work on The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants and Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness, this adaptation brings the world of Dog Man to vibrant life. The film also features a star-studded voice cast, including Isla Fisher (Wedding Crashers, Rango), Poppy Liu (Hacks, The Afterparty), Stephen Root (Barry, King of the Hill), Billy Boyd (Lord of the Rings franchise, Seed of Chucky), and Ricky Gervais (The Office, Extras). Produced by Karen Foster, this film is a joyous celebration of friendship, heroism, and fun.
We had the pleasure of speaking with Peter Hastings, who opened up about his incredible career in animation and the challenges of adapting the Dog Man books into a movie. Hastings shared his thoughts on the delicate balance between remaining true to the graphic novels that fans love while making sure the animation medium delivers its own unique flair. It was clear that staying faithful to the heart and humor of Dav Pilkey’s work was paramount, yet translating that into animation meant embracing new storytelling tools and a fresh visual style.
Hastings also spoke about the incredible voice cast, noting how each performer brought something special to their characters, adding layers to the familiar faces from the books. The cast’s energy and chemistry were essential to bringing these animated characters to life in a way that would resonate with both fans of the original books and a new generation of viewers.
The movie is not only a celebration of Dog Man’s existing fanbase but also an opportunity to capture a wider audience with the power of animation and humor. Hastings expressed his excitement at the film’s potential to engage viewers who might be experiencing Dog Man for the first time while delivering the same joy that long-time fans expect.
Whether you’re a fan of the books or new to the world of ‘Dog Man‘, this animated film adaptation is sure to leave you laughing and inspired.
