Percy Jackson Sea of MonstersIn this 20th Century Fox sequel to the 2010, modernized Greek mythology tale, Logan Lerman reprises his role as Percy Jackson, a demigod born of a human mother and Poseidon, god of the sea. Along with Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario), the daugther of Athena, goddess of wisdom and and Grover (Brandon T. Jackson) a satyr, must face new obstacles from rival Clarisse (Leven Rambin), the daughter of Ares, the god of war, but also, Luke (Jake Abel), son of Hermes (Nathan Fillion), the messenger god, who is on a quest to resurrect his grandfather, the chief Titan, Kronos, to take over the world.

This go around Jackson, discovers he has a half brother, only, who is more monster than man, in Tyson (Douglas Smith), who is half Cyclops, a species of which Annabeth, refuses to associate with.

Writer Marc Guggenheim (Arrow), was able to find an excellent balance of remaining true to Greek mythology, while modernizing the story of Perseus and his journeys. There are several greatlines throughout the film, especially from Stanley Tucci, who plays “Mr. D.” aka Dionysus, the god of wine. In one instance, he is punished by Zeus for stealing a potential lover and every time he tries to have a glass of wine it is turned into water. Mr. D tells fell instructor Chiron (Anthony Head), “You know the Christians have a guy who does this in the reverse (looking up to the heavens), now THAT is a god!”

The film is visually stunning thanks to the direction of Thor Freudenthal and his keen eye for detail. Fillion is always entertaining, even in small parts, but the Firefly jokes about it being the greatest canceled show ever are tired and need to stop (It’s been 10 years, let it go already). The on screen chemistry between Lerman and Daddario is very realistic, especially in the admiration Annabeth has for Percy, while the tension between Percy and Clarisse would make for an interesting love triangle later on.

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, even touches on racism and holding grudges, especially between Annabeth who watched as a cyclops killed Thalia (Paloma Kwiatkowski), daughter of Zeus. father of the gods. It is through Tyson, that she learns about not stereotyping those that are different from you or people of a different race who have wronged you are not all the same.

Loaded with action, humor and moral subtext, this is a fun family film that parents will enjoy along with their kids and one that I have been told does the novels by Rick Riordan, justice. Remember, not everything is going to be exactly like the book, if it was, each film would be 14 hours long.

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters opens today, August 7th, nationwide.
