‘Paper Towns’ Makes Origami Out of Your Emotions

GameStop, Inc.

Fox 2000 Pictures and author John Green do it again by obliterating the mega blockbuster competition in sacrificing flash for story following up the 2014 smash, The Fault in Our Stars, with Paper Towns. A coming-of-age film where Quentin “Q” Jacobson (Nat Wolff), a high school senior who’s life is planned out to the second falls in love from afar with Margo Roth Spiegelman (Cara Delevingne), his childhood friend who lives across the street, but has become more fascinated with mystery than reality.

As time passes Margo and Q grow in separate directions. Q is an honor student, a band geek, awkward and shy, as for Margo, there is an aura of mystique around her. Almost having a Ferris Bueller level of popularity, Margo has the whole school talking about her, but wonders if they truly know her.

One faithful night, a couple of weeks before everyone’s love/hate relationship with prom, Margo convinces Q to go on a revenge mission after finding out her boyfriend Jase (Griffin Freeman) has been cheating on her. After one final hurrah in mischief, Margo disappears, leaving only trace clues behind for Q and his friends Ben (Austin Abrams), Lacey (Halston Sage), Angela (Jaz Sinclair) and Radar (Justice Smith) to find out where Margo is, but often times what you search for isn’t what you expected to find.

This movie really hits every which way it can. Screen writers Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber have been able to tap into real emotions that every unpopular to semi-popular, but goofy kid has felt or currently feels in school. Most of us have a Margo Spiegelman. That girl who is absolutely wrong for you, never thinks twice about you when you are out of sight, but for the brief moment she does notice you you feel the world stop and it’s just the two of you.

I have a Margo Spiegelman. I can tell you what year I met her, what class, which period, and even the dress she was wearing. I can also tell you that five years later we went to prom, and another five years after that we ran into each other again, only this time, she was the Ghost of Christmas past. A fleeting, fond memory, without much substance and really had no place in my life.

Sometimes…and as Q learns in the story, what you thought you wanted and what you end up getting isn’t really what you imagined. You’re grateful for the experience, but the life you are meant for isn’t necessarily the direction you’re going in, or rather, sometimes you need to take the scenic route and enjoy the ride along the way instead of taking the express lane.

Nat Wolff has a knack for making that awkward kid the “every man.” His portrayal of Q is easily relatable and often makes you remember someone from childhood, or reminds you that he was you in your teenage years. Cara Delevigne really embodied the character of Margo, so well in fact that you would almost assume she wasn’t acting. Austin Abrams and Justice Smith, are the comic relief and will remind you of those two geeks who were a little weird, but you were better off for having known them.

Like the headline reads, Paper Towns Makes Origami Out of Your Emotions. This movie hits every note with precision and accuracy. The soundtrack only enhances every emotion you are intended to and will feel.

Paper Towns open on Friday, July 24, 2015.
