The Paper Tigers Official Trailer  shows us some awesome kung fu, hilarious takes on popular martial arts movie tropes, and just looks like a damn fun film

The Paper Tigers is the story of three prodigal kung fu disciples… who grew up. Danny (Alain Uy), Hing (Ron Yuan) and Jim (Mykel Shannon Jenkins) were inseparable as teenage kung fu disciples who have grown into washed-up middle-aged men who would throw their back out bowing, let alone be kung fu fighters. But the news of their old master’s murder reunites the trio and requires them to conquer old grudges and a dangerous hitman, who still has knee cartilage, in order to avenge his death.

Personally, I love the sort of “realistic” approach the film is taking. Everyone is old and unable to move like it did, their kids make fun of them, and Danny drives one of the stereotypical Asian vans. All are very relatable which makes the action, humor, and kind of stereotypical “students avenger their master” trope resonate. What I particularly like, which most studios avoid like the plague, is the American-Asian perspective. It’s supposedly unbankable because the Asia audience does not want to watch stories of Asians in America and the long-standing tradition of studios just hiring White people to play Asian characters. The scene where the melanin-deficient kung fu master is explaining the situation to the Paper Tigers in Mandarin (or Cantonese, I can’t tell) and Danny says “Can you just say it in English?” was powerful. I was sold before that line, but that line made it from a “want-to-see-film” to a “must-see-film.”

Paper Tigers releases in theaters and On Demand on May 7, 2021.

As teenagers, kung fu disciples Danny (Alain Uy), Hing (Ron Yuan) and Jim (Mykel Shannon Jenkins) were inseparable. Fast forward 25 years, and each has grown into a washed-up middle-aged man seemingly one kick away from pulling a hamstring—and not at all preoccupied with thoughts of martial arts or childhood best friends.
