Hey, where’s Rufio? I only say that as a reminder that sometimes trying to find a different way to tell a classic story can have disastrous results. The last time anyone tried a different take on the story of Peter Pan, audiences were greeted with Hook, which is the worst film ever directed by Steven Spielberg. That being said, Pan hasn’t been plagued with the behind the scenes issues that followed Spielberg’s production, and director Joe Wright has assembled a great cast for his version of the fairy tale. Based on the brief glimpses in the trailer, it looks like Hugh Jackman is going to be playing Blackbeard as a larger than life caricature, which may serve the film quite well. The film also stars Levi Miller as the titular hero as well as Garrett Hedlund as James Hook (I guess he hasn’t reached the rank of Captain yet), Rooney Mara, Amanda Seyfried, and Cara Delevigne. Pan swoops into theaters on October 9th, 2015.
The official synopsis for Pan:
Peter (Levi Miller) is a mischievous 12-year-old boy with an irrepressible rebellious streak, but in the bleak London orphanage where he has lived his whole life those qualities do not exactly fly. Then one incredible night, Peter is whisked away from the orphanage and spirited off to a fantastical world of pirates, warriors and fairies called Neverland. There, he finds amazing adventures and fights life-or-death battles while trying to uncover the secret of his mother, who left him at the orphanage so long ago, and his rightful place in this magical land. Teamed with the warrior Tiger Lily (Rooney Mara) and a new friend named James Hook (Garrett Hedlund), Peter must defeat the ruthless pirate Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman) to save Neverland and discover his true destiny—to become the hero who will forever be known as Peter Pan.
