PADAK – What Finding Nemo Was Supposed To Be Like

GameStop, Inc.
Eigomanga’s award-winning animated film PADAK is a roller coaster ride full of emotions and is the more realistic version of Finding Nemo. PADAK depicts the harsh reality of captive fish waiting to be served to customers, mixed with the protagonist’s, Padak (a blue mackerel), burning desire to escape back into the ocean. This isn’t your typical Finding Nemo or Finding Dory film where life as a fish is all fine and dandy… this may be the farthest thing from it!
Padak
The story takes place in a local fresh fish restaurant right outside the harbor. The restaurant serves a variety of fish including mackerel, flatfish, king crabs and more. Padak was captured and delivered to the restaurant by local fishermen and placed with 6 other types of fishes. Unfortunately for Padak, the tank she was dropped into is being militarized by a flatfish and a sea eel. The fishes of the tank have been beaten down by the harsh reality, of eventually being chosen to be killed and served, that they will do anything to survive. Even if it means eating other fish to do so.
While the other fish have all been raised in farms or captivity, Padak was the only one who came from the vast ocean. Similar to Plato’s Cave, Padak can’t think of anything else than to break free of the invisible walls and make it back into the world she knew. She explains that she’s only explored a small portion of the Ocean and there’s so much more to experience and it was either make it back to the ocean or die trying.
Director Lee Dae Hee did a great job of using the story of a fish to display some of our race’s largest problems. The classic struggle between accepting your environment and reality versus the unwavering belief in your destination and your goals. Would you choose getting what you have been working so hard for at the cost of throwing away your sense of self and conscious? Despite doing everything you think is right and with all the right intentions, sometimes the world ignores it and you end up with the short end of the stick.
PADAK featured multiple styles of artwork within the film which was intriguing. Whoever drew the humans did a great job of making them look evil and sinister (the kid had the creepiest vibe ever…) Even the animation of how he walked was creepy; he looked like a little imp. Not sure if this was intentional, but regardless they nailed it!
MAJOR PLOT TWIST SPOILER ALERT! The last 10 minutes of the film was a huge surprise to me and I can agree why PADAK was the winner of several international awards; some of which were given by Vladivostok International Film Festival, Jeonju International Film Festival, and Seoul International Cartoon & Animation Festival. There won’t be a film about fish more dramatic and emotional than PADAK. If you’re looking for a quick fix to get your emotions all jumbled up then make sure to watch PADAK (it runs a little over an hour).
Eigomanga and the team did a stellar job on the film and I do recommend checking it out if you have the time. Would I watch it again? Probably not. But I do not regret watching it PADAK one bit.

Disclaimer: Don’t watch this at night, I ended up dreaming that I was a fish in a fish market. The dream didn’t end well for me… haha
The Verdict
  • PADAK Review
3.5

Summary

PADAK is a great representation of some of life’s harshest realities. This isn’t a movie for kids unless you want their dreams to be crushed.
