Americanized follows the story of Eng (Terry Hu) an American Born Chinese (forgive me if this term is no longer in use) that plays high school basketball and is trying to realized where she belongs in this world. She not fully Chinese and she is not full American, but tries to find out where she fits in her hometown of Oakland, CA.
Director, Erica Eng makes this semi-autobiographical story all too really for those of us who have no idea where we fit in as we might have ethnic ties to the old world and no sense of belonging in the new world.
Eng, herself is a fifth generation American and like myself, who is first generation knows all too well when your own ethnic identity shuns you for one reason or another.
The character of Eng even faces racism from the ethnic group on her basketball team that she tries to identify with and seeks acceptance from when she gets too, “familiar” in her behavior with one of her teammates when the insult game gets a little too heated and the one girl gets offended.
In just 17 minutes, Erica Eng tells a full and complete story that easily could be a full length feature film and unlike the 1997 comedy, Fakin’ Da Funk that took on a similar subject matter, Eng takes the dramatic approach with her short film that makes me want to see 95 minute version of what could come next in this character’s story.
