The Original GLOW Girls React to the Netflix’s ‘GLOW’

GameStop, Inc.

Netflix released all 10, 30-minute episodes of the dramedy GLOW, loosely based on the real Gorgeous Ladies of

Wrestling. Original GLOW Girl Roxy Astor, hosted a GLOW viewing party at her home in the Los Angeles area.

The reaction from the originals was mixed, as expected. Some appreciated the effort, while others, like Matilda the Hun, who had conceptualized the series prior to meeting David McLane and Matt Cimber, was the most disappointed and hurt by the reimagined series. Along for the ride were several fans and actress Marilyn Ghigliotti.

Here is what the Original GLOW Girls had to say about the Netflix GLOW series:

Matilda the Hun – The girls seem like B-actresses who don’t have a clue what wrestling is and it’s not clear if this show is about wrestling and it’s not clear that it is about a television show. What they did to Matt Cimber is thoroughly disgusting. This guy (Sam Silvia played by Marc Maron) doesn’t exude directorship at all. There was no female empowerment, magic or fun. To me it, it is an imitation that they didn’t know what they are imitating.

There is a party over here to watch the show and the people here are more captivated by a balloon caught in the fan. It is not the show of dreams and the magical, comedic stories that the original GLOW was. I don’t see any true glamor, it’s supposed to be the GORGEOUS Ladies of Wrestling. I hope all of this really changes…I really do.

Their so-called star (Alison Brie) doesn’t have a muscle on her boney ass. I’m sorry to be so mean, but it doesn’t seem like anything is glorious about these women. We were fit, funny and extraordinary. I wish them all the best.

Hollywood (Through Facebook Direct Message) – I really do like the show, I think the acting is well and at times it’s funny!! GLOW Netflix is very loosely based on the original GLOW. We ran a much tighter ship then GLOW Netflix but it gets a thumbs up for me!

Daisy – I’m sad, because I don’t really how they portrayed the character based on Matt (Cimber). He came with the idea and they made Sam look like he needed those girls. He (Cimber) didn’t need us, he did it as favor for his friend. They made Ruth really weak and needy. I suppose we all are in our own way, but they focused on that too much and didn’t show any of that, but all the girls did really well.

We feel that we were shafted before and 30 years later, we are getting shafted again. It feels like they are making off our backs again, but we are sitting on the sidelines and there would be no Netflix GLOW without the originals.

Angel (Through Facebook Direct Message) – If that isn’t about the original GLOW then my name isn’t Angel. THey obviously couldn’t come up with any characters that could be as great or actually original. That being said, I did enjoy watching it. PS – Matt (Cimber) wasn’t a coke fiend.

Ashley Cartier (Via Text Message) – It’s OK, our characters were much more creative. Our personas were way more entertaining! I’m still, “eh” about it, but the first episode was the best.

Lightning – Maybe 10 percent, if even that was reality based. In context of what they are saying, that they are basing it on a true story? It’s VERY, very, very loosely based on a true story. I don’t want people to think what they are kicking out is what really happened. I told my students that if they have any questions after watching this to ask me and I will tell them the real stories.

Roxy Astor – I wanted to be grabbed in the first episode and I know that is a Jenji Kohan does, because I was a fan of Weeds and Orange is the New Black, but it didn’t pick up until the fourth one. I’m looking at it from a different point of view because I’m too close to home to this. The fans reaction is mixed. I think Jenji Kohan knew exactly what she was doing by using, “The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling,” because fans tonight wanted to watch our matches on YouTube afterwards.

Corporal Kelly II – It’s so surreal to be on the outside looking in. They’re doing a good job of capturing the feelings of insecurity, and abuse mixed with true desire to be a part of something new and exciting. I especially like the touches that only we may get. The Welfare Queen in episode three is wearing a Burger King crown. The Burger King in The Valley is where I met Matt (Cimber) when he asked me to come to Vegas to try out. I passed Justice on my way out, later she became my roommate. All-in-all, I’m thrilled to have had the pleasure of being a part of something that is still inspiring and entertaining people thirty years later!

Royal Hawaiian – I was excited when it was announced. I was one of the originals and did the pilot, but it bothered me with all the drug stuff. It was really disappointing they used that aspect, I mean sure there were people using, but it wasn’t every where like they made it out to be. It would have been better if they talked to all of us. This GLOW was not a positive light and what we hear from our fans and even younger kids will go watch our old matches from 30 years ago.

What they need to remember is that with Matt Cimber and David McLane there would be a GLOW Netflix series now to base it off. There may have been some issues, but you can’t take away from what they created together.

Sunny, The California Girl – It was very shameful. “Sam” with all the cocaine, it was so far from the way it was with the original GLOW girls. It was a joke…it’s not a joke. It’s disgraceful. We are the originals, you can’t replace us. However, Betty Gilpin…A-1 class act. I loved her!

Melody “Trouble” Vixen (MTV) – It’s well acted…for what it is. I’m a writer, a producer and an actress. They are portraying their characters really well. I see a lot of characters combined, like Melrose is myself and Hollywood. Sheila is a mix of Dementia, JungleGrrrl and Gremlina, same with a few others. What I’m so disappointed in, we took our work seriously. We worked hard. We were not flippest in our approach. I feel it was very disrespectful that way.

A friend of mine asked me, “Are they trying to steal your history?” By their own admission, they said they are doing a behind the scenes look of GLOW from the beginning, then why didn’t talk to ANY OF US about our experiences? We went out there and did it when no one else would do it. We listened to our director who is a genius, who I still work with until this day. To see him represented as a drugged out loser, who wants to insult all the women is beyond a travesty. He’s a genius. What he did was pure genius. What people don’t understand is he’s a real supporter of women.

If you are going to do this kind of a take, why call it “GLOW?” Why say it is the “Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling?” Why take my life if you are going to twist it and how we broke the glass ceiling, not for just wrestling but all sports. Women got a bigger shake after us and that should be honored.
