‘OC Winter Fest’ Through the Eyes of My 5 Year Old

GameStop, Inc.

Instead of the typical rote review of an event I felt something different was in order for OC Winter Fest. I interviewed my five year old daughter about her experience there.
What follows is slightly altered from the original interview to remove extraneous content and for potty breaks.
Me: So, Maddie how was the OC Winter Fest?
Maddie: Um, what’s that?
Me: The thing you went to last Friday (blank look from Maddie)… The carnival you went to.
Maddie: Oh, yeah that was cool. Wanna play shopkins?
Me: In a minute. Can you tell me what you did there?
Maddie: Um… we did stuff.
Me: Like inner tubing down a hill side?
Maddie: (her eyes grow wide) Oh yeah! That was really cool, I did it like five times. I went really fast and spun around. I got snow in my face from it, but it was fun.
Me: Did you know that it was called Snowflake Summit and it was a hundred and thirty feet long?
Maddie: (rolls her eyes) Of course, daddy.
Me: Just checking. What else did you do?
Maddie: Ummm, I went ice skating. I thought that was great! It was pretty big and it was slippery…
Me: Cause it was ice.
Maddie: (withering stare) Yes, dad.
Me: Go on.
Maddie: I got the skates and couldn’t stand up on the ice so I got one of the helpers that looked like a polar bear*. I wanted a penguin… cause IMG_4411I love penguins… but all the penguins were being used, so I got the polar bear. After that I could stand up and I went around and around on the ice till mommy told me to get off the ice. I just smiled and pretended not to hear her and went around another time.
Me: Ah, that’s a good trick. Have you done that to me?
Maddie: Ye… no. (a pause) I love you dad!
Me: Ok, ok, moving on. What else did you do?
Maddie: Stuff.
Me: Like go on rides?
Maddie: Oh yeah, I went on a car that bounced up and down** it was like the rides we go on at the pier but the rides at the pier are submarines while these were cars.
Me: Same principle.
Maddie: Principle Dixon*** wasn’t there! Was she?
Me: Probably not.
Maddie: Ok. There was a ride that was a roller coaster too. It looked like a dragon. (Pause) I like dragons. I want to draw a picture of a dragon! (She gets up and heads for her room)
Me: In a bit. You gotta tell me what else you did.

Maddie: Oh yeah. We went through a giant Christmas ornament and saw big nutcracker soldiers, too. (thinks for a second) Ohhhh, we saw reindeer, real reindeer! I fed them!
Me: Did you give them carrots like you do for Santa’s reindeer?
Maddie: No, it was graham crackers! They love graham crackers! ****
Me: Who doesn’t? ***** What else?
Maddie: We saw them turn on the big tree and we played a few games ****** I didn’t win anything though.
Me: Sorry.
Maddie: It’s ok. I went on a slide too. It was a big slide and I sat on a towel or something and slid down. It was fun.
Me: Did you have hot cocoa?
IMG_4406Maddie: Yeah, it didn’t taste good but I got a cookie with it. *******
Me: Anything else? I heard there were girls with chainsaws carving ice.
Maddie: I don’t think you should play with chainsaws they’re dangerous!
Me: You had a toy one when you were younger.
Maddie: Yeah but that was a toy not a real one. Real ones are dangerous.
Me: Well these girls know how to use them.
Maddie: Ok but I didn’t see them.********
Me: Fine.
Maddie: They had fireworks too! None of them looked like Mickey Mouse or squares like we see at Disneyland but fireworks are great no matter what shape.
Me: Truth. Did you have fun there at OC Winterfest?
Maddie: Yes, I liked it. (Pause… thinking) I have to go potty now. Do you want to play Shopkins after I pee?
Me: Of course.
Maddie: Ok. I get to be Mixy and Maxie.
Me: Damn, I wanted to be that one you said.
There you have it, Winter Fest at the OC Fair and event center is still going till January 3rd with rides, games, unlimited ice tubing, rides that look like dragons but not submarines, dangerous chainsaws and not square fireworks. Kids dig this kind of stuff and kids are easily distracted so there is plenty to distract them.
Also I never knew Reindeer liked graham crackers. *********

*The skating helper was for an extra fee.
** You get one free ride with admission.
***The Principle of Maddie’s school (obviously).
**** The graham crackers are complimentary. Maddie also said the reindeer stink but that seemed rude so I put it down here.
***** Isis.
****** Midway games are $5 a pop be prepared to shell out for that styrofoam bead filled minion your kid will want.
******* Hot cocoa was complimentary but it was difficult finding someone to honor the coupon. All foodstuffs are available for a price geared towards a captive audience.
******** The Chainsaw chicks carve ice sculptures with chainsaws (duh) in a display that could only seem possible in “Orange County” and ‘Muerica!
********* You learn something new every day, I guess.
