Jeff Parker and Javier Pulido blew me away with the new Ninjak #1 this week from Valiant Entertainment! Things become a huge mess as MI6’s top secrets have all been exposed and that includes the identity of Ninjak himself, Colin King. As the bounty increases on his head, Ninjak has no where left to go be run around the world to discover the truth about the organization that calls itself Daylight.
The irony is not lost on us that a secret organization calling itself Daylight is hiding in the shadows revealing the world’s secrets, but it is a beautifully told story as Valiant Entertainment continues to bring us some of the best comics in the business.
This espionage thriller put forth by Parker and Pulido feels more like a storyboard pilot for a new television or streaming series than an ordinary comic book. The adventure throughout Turkey almost reminds me of Vertigo’s Sheriff of Babylon while the art is such a contrast from the harshness of the world at large, yet fits the narrative perfectly.
The difficulties in reading a digital comic book is not scrolling too far ahead as I enjoyed each panel put to on the page. The superspy aspect that is shared with their readers allow Park and Pulido to play with the emotions of the audience from the comfort of our own homes.
What stands out beyond the contrast is in the written word and the visual depictions that we can seek a real person like Colin King in our mind’s eye going on these type of adventures in a realistic manner.
Ninjak #1 is available today from Valiant Entertainment at your local comic book store and online.
