New York Menace Invades Your Phone! – Spider-Man Unlimited Game Review

GameStop, Inc.

Citizens beware! The menace known as Spider-Man is invading mobile devices all across the globe, and he’s not alone.

Released in September 2014, Spider-Man Unlimited introduces a story line with elements of the recent Spider-Verse arc in the comics. Our favorite web-slinger is facing off against the Sinister Six of multiple universes and he can’t do it alone. Who better to stop  villains from the multi-verse than the Spider-Men and Spider-Women of the multi-verse.

The game is an “endless runner” game that shows Spider-Man running across the streets and rooftops of New York to punch enemies, collect vials and power-ups, and defeat bosses. Unique to the game, players are able to web-swing through the streets of New York, free fall off the edge of skyscrapers, scale tall buildings, and occasionally travel through different dimensions. The controls are simple and easy to learn, just swipe up, down, left, right and tap/hold for web-swings. To conquer the game, the player will have to hone their skills and reflexes if they hope to defeat the Sinister Six.

The game has three modes of play: event, campaign, and survival. Events are released weekly and give the player the chance to earn vials, iso-8, and extremely rare Spider-Men/Women. Campaign is where the player will go through the story and play through six issues, one for every member of the Sinister Six. Survival mode tests the player’s endurance and challenges them to make their longest run and attain a new high score. In reference to the title, the player can acquire different Spider-Men/Women from different universes (via Recruit, Events, or daily log-in) each with their own unique abilities and background.

Spider-Man Unlimited is a simple yet addicting game and is addicting because of how simple it is. One of the biggest attractions to the game is how easily one can collect the rare Spider-Men/Women (4 stars or more). A player can buy Spider-Men/Women in the Recruit section (look out for the daily deals that cut the iso-8 price in half!), win them by accomplishing the goals in events, ranking within top 10 of events, and even gain one every seven days just for logging in. Iso-8s are also easily attainable by accomplishing the daily goals, events, and beating certain missions on story mode. While one can spend money to buy iso-8s, it is not necessary since it does not increase your chances of attaining Spider-Men/Women with more stars and better abilities.

The game provides the player the same witty humor found in the comics while also guest starring other known Marvel heroes such as Iron Man, Black Cat, and Nick Fury. Trivia is given for every Spider-Man/Woman with info such as their first appearance and notable history. By combining a city that will change between night and day (or dimensions) with the ability to alternate between Spider-Men/Women, the game keeps players from getting bored. The animation perfectly captures our hero’s ability to swing, crawl, and run across the buildings of New York.

Spider-Man Unlimited unfortunately does have some lag issues. They’re especially noticeable during runs, when downloading new content, and when on the main menu (I have accidentally bought a premium Spider-Man one too many times). The biggest downside, especially for me, is the inability to transfer game data from one mobile device to another. Losing saved game data and having to start from scratch to regain everything is one of the greatest tragedies to happen to any gamer.

Overall, Spider-Man Unlimited is definitely worth downloading especially because it’s free. With issue 6 to be released soon and new events always being released, the replay value is immense. Simple enough to get a quick game in, but requires spider-like reflexes to rank up the leaderboard. Spider-Fans will be more than satisfied with Spider-Man Unlimited due to its amazing graphics, superior animation, and ultimate campaign. I give Spider-man Unlimited a solid 8/10.

If you’re ready to accept that with great power, comes great responsibility then swing by the nearest app store on your mobile device and help Spider-man defeat the Sinister .
