The kingdom of Liones is in trouble and the only ones that can save it is a group of knights that once plotted to overtake the very same kingdom, the Seven Deadly Sins.
Based off of the manga written by Nakaba Suzuki, The Seven Deadly Sins (or Nanatsu no Taizai) was adapted into a television anime by A-1 pictures and aired from October 2014 to March 2015. Netflix acquired the exclusive streaming rights for the series and released the anime with the official English dub on November 1, 2015. The Seven Deadly Sins is the second exclusive Netflix anime series with the first being Knights of Sidonia. The anime features a setting similar to European Middle Ages with a group of knights representing the seven deadly sins from Christianity and Catholicism.
The Seven Deadly Sins is a group of powerful knights that plotted to overtake the Liones Kingdom, but their plan failed and their defeat came at the hands of the Holy Knights. The Seven Deadly Sins are believed to be dead but rumors continue to persist that the sins are still alive. Ten years later, the Holy Nights that once protected the kingdom staged a coup d’etat to capture the king and are now living as tyrannical rulers throughout the kingdom. The king’s daughter, Elizabeth, is desperate to save her father and searches for the only people that can oppose the Holy Knights, the Seven Deadly Sins.
The Seven Deadly Sins is a personal favorite of mine with great characters and storyline. The anime does a great job of developing each character each with their own respective back story. Each sin is different from the next with each one having a different power, personality, and coming from one of the respective clans that exist within Britannia. One of the sins, Meliodas, is not a character viewers would expect to be the captain of a powerful group of knights. Instead, he is pretty much a child and has a perverted habit of touching Elizabeth’s body, but the end season finale shows Meliodas proves why he is the captain of the Seven Deadly Sins. The story is a great combination of action, adventure, comedy and a little bit of perversion. One of the best things of the anime are the unexpected twists that makes parts of the storyline just fall into place.
The anime’s visuals are great, being able to capture the intense battles from the manga and the gravity of an opponent that’s too powerful to defeat. I do not like most English dubs for anime, but The Seven Deadly Sins is one of the few exceptions. The anime does a great job of translating the context and emotion for viewers listening in English. Ban’s reaction when Hawk is revived at the final episode was one of my favorite moments from the series and was done very well.
My only pet peeve for the series is that the subtitles do not match the English dub. A very small issue and can easily be solved just by just turning off the English subtitles while watching the English dub or by only using the subtitles when selecting the original Japanese dub.
Overall the official English dub of The Seven Deadly Sins is a great addition to world of Netflix and was a great choice for Netflix to acquire the exclusive streaming rights to. Netflix’s third exclusive anime series will be Ajin: A Demi-Human, and for fans of blood and gore, this will be a must watch.
Happy binging.
Summary
Great dubbing for the series. Captures the personalities of each character and a great series overall.
