Angry Happiness – Mutant Mudds Super Challenge Review

If you’re happiest when you’re mad, I think you’ll like what I have to say in my Mutant Mudds Super Challenge Review

First off, Mutant Mudds Super Challenge undersells itself in its title. A challenge is trying to wake up on the first alarm. Mutant Mudds Super Challenge is like trying not hit the snooze button after an all-nighter, on your day off. This game may look cute and cuddly with its bright colors and awesome Super Nintendo inspired music, but this game is spiteful. Like an ex-girlfriend you cheated on with an uglier girl spiteful. If you want to know the background and stuff, check out our coverage piece then come back and read the rest of my Mutant Mudds Super Challenge Review.

You play as Max, armed with your jetpack and water gun it is up to you to take out the Mutant Mudds from conquering the planet. The story is very direct and to the point, very simple but provides enough back story and motivation to get the players interest. I didn’t get far enough in the game to see if there were any further developments, but there also isn’t a real need for one.

I am very torn about how to present this. Overall the gameplay is great, it feels very much like the original Mega Man games. Except you have a touchy jetpack. The game has the basic directions controls, which can be activated via d-pad or left thumbstick, and a jump and shoot button. Pressing the jump button while in the air activates the jetpack. The controls are extremely basic, but the environments and enemies provide a great depth to the gameplay. The three-layered environment makes each environment three times bigger than expected, while also expanding the gameplay. It adds for numerous variations to gameplay and equally as many hazards to be aware of. However, the controls do not feel consistent. This is what I was torn about. I am unsure if I am just an impatient and impulsive player, or a really neurotic one that notices subtle changes in response time and sensitivity that it makes or breaks your run. It could also be my controller and its wireless connection too. But other than that, and the game being far more difficult than I like, it is a well-polished platformer that is in the same realm of the great platformers of Super Mario and Sonic.

The three-layered environment in every level is masterful. It is something that makes full use of the 8-bit (more like 32-bit) medium as well as the 2D Platformer Genre. Renegade Kids are true lovers and masters of the 2D Platformer, and they show it with Mutant Mudds Super Challenge. There are some visual issues I had, that are likely intended, when traveling between layers and the visual significance of hazards. It is sometimes hard to tell if an enemy or trap is in the way of you path, as well as hard to tell your exact travel path. This leads to numerous “facepalm” moments deaths. Aside from that, the visuals are a beautiful homage to the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis days, and the music is so nostalgic it makes risking your entire run to find them in the level worth it.

Mutant Mudds Super Challenge Review

The Verdict

Mutant Mudds Super Challenge lays it all out there from the title to the gameplay. It is a masterful platformer that is equal parts fun and frustration. Personally, I hate games that are renown for their “difficulty” because it becomes a matter of memorizing the level and the necessary timing/button combos to beat it. However, Mutant Mudds Super Challenge seems to add a little class to the gameplay and some truly enjoyable depth in the mechanics. If you’re looking for a challenging platformer or want to switch from happy to mad every half second, this is the game for you! With that, I give Mutant Mudds Super Challenge 7.7/10

Mutant Mudds Super Challenge
  • 6/10
    Story - 6/10
  • 8/10
    Gameplay - 8/10
  • 8/10
    Mechanics - 8/10

Ther Verdict

Mutant Mudds Super Challenge lives up to its name. It’s one of those games that challenges gamers skills (memory) and patience. It is a great homage to the platformers of the 90’s and a catalyst to rage quitting. On that note, it is a simple yet deep game that is guaranteed to cause hours of fun/frustration.
