Minecraft: Story Mode – Episode 2 – Assembly Required is the next chapter in Telltale’s latest choose your own adventure game. It takes place just after the end of episode one and your decision at the end of the previous episode directly influences the story of the game. This, however, causes one of the episodes major problems, its length.

I ended episode one going with Jessie to find Ellegaard as opposed to going with Axel to find Magnus. That is where this episode begins. By the time you regroup with with the others about 30 minutes or so passes. That is where the problem lies, that is half of the episode. I finished the episode in about one hour. That makes this probably the shortest episode in all of Telltale’s games. Not to mention, the story itself wasn’t nearly as strong as the first episode. There was very little character development and seemed like it was just a means to introduce the two members of the Order of the Stone and to get the characters from point A to point B. The game’s villain even seemed shoehorned in, only to pop out and yell “I’ll get away this time you meddling kids!”

The story itself wasn’t anything too special either, which was disappointing because of how strong and interesting episode one was. Like I said, I started my playthrough going to find Ellegaard. After finding your way into Ellegaard’s chambers and convincing her to go with you, you are attacked by the witherstorm and eventually you make your way back to the temple. When you arrive you find your other friend went off on their own and found the other Order member, in this case Axel found Magnus. After a bit of bickering between Ellegaard and Magnus you find Ivor is trying to get to the last Order member, Soren.

This episode was, honestly, pretty lackluster. With it’s short length and lackluster story, this would’ve been a disappointing intro the the series or Telltale’s games in general. Hopefully the game can get back on track and become as good as not only episode one, but the rest of Telltale’s catalog

The Verdict

Episode two’s split path cuts the episode length short and the story seems rushed. Definitely not the episode two you’d expect after the fantastic episode one.
