Writer-director Jeff Nichols burst onto the scene in 2008 with the critically lauded Shotgun Stories and hasn’t slowed down since. His latest film Midnight Special is already generating buzz. The sci-fi chase film follows a father of a young boy with strange powers struggling to keep him safe from extremists while desperately trying to uncover the truth about those powers.
Midnight Special stars frequent collaborator Michael Shannon, Joel Edgerton, Kirsten Dunst, Adam Driver, Jaeden Lieberher, Sam Shepard, Bill Camp, Scott Haze, and Paul Sparks. It is directed by Nichols from his own screenplay. The film Empire Magazine calls “soulful sci-fi” has just released this second trailer emphasizing the tension and desperation of a father willing to do anything to protect his child.
Here’s the official synopsis:
In the sci-fi thriller “Midnight Special,” writer/director Jeff Nichols proves again that he is one of the most compelling storytellers of our time, as a father (Michael Shannon), goes on the run to protect his young son, Alton (Jaeden Lieberher), and uncover the truth behind the boy’s special powers.
What starts as a race from religious extremists and local law enforcement quickly escalates to a nationwide manhunt involving the highest levels of the Federal Government. Ultimately his father risks everything to protect Alton and help fulfill a destiny that could change the world forever, in this genre–defying film as supernatural as it is intimately human.
Midnight Special hits theaters March 18th.
