MICRONAUTS #1
Story By: Cullen Bunn
Art By: David Baldeon
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Release Date: April 27th
Cullen Bunn’s has an incredible history across several publishers including Marvel and DC and he delivers. Micronauts has been around since the 1970’s with the Mego released in the 70’s as well. Simply put, these toys have a cult following that is almost unheard of. Both Marvel and Image had their time to shine with the cult phenom favorites as well but this is the here and now.
Let’s just start this review off right and say Cullen Bunn hits on all cylinders with this issue. It’s a whole new world and universe for each of these characters with fresh storylines and interesting tweaks. Let’s start with the character we are introduced to. Say hello to Oz the rogue courier, Acroyer the old genetically engineered warrior, Space Gilder the cool rebel girl wearing a stolen prototype space suit, the Orbital Defender Larissa – medical/science student and Baron Karza the now Savior of the Microverse,
The Microverse is in trouble from what, basically entropy waves that threaten to destroy all reality. The rulers of the Microverse, including the Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Science both are doing their best to find a way to fix the threat. The entire issue reads like a space opera, very similar to how I felt when I watched “The Fifth Element”. Only comparison that I could think of but oddly accurate.
OZ with his misfit crew with their one in a million warp-drive ships adds depth to the story. Karza’s evil forces blockading a space station that is currently run by the Ministry of Science is another. These stations produce medical supplies needed across the solar system. What is actually in the space station is what totally changes the stakes and makes for a great read.
Baldeon’s incredible artwork is perfect for the level of detail needed in the science fiction storytelling we are being told. His use of each panel screams detail and solid pace. Really impressive work. Baldeon’s work includes Web Warriors, Nova, and X-Men for Marvel. He has also done work on Young Allies, Skylanders, Dungeons & Dragons, Black Vortex, Storm, and more. He is a well accomplished artist that puts in the work in this issue. Several colorists touch this issue including David Garcia Cruz, Joana Lafuente, Thomas Deer and John-Paul Bove. Each does a great job.
A dying universe! Acroyear, Space Glider, Biortron and new allies are back and still on the run from the evil Baron Karza. This issue starts with magic and science vying for control, resources dwindling down and our long-lost time travelers possibly holding the key to saving everything. Issue one sets the stage, now let’s see how this series plays out……so far, sooooo GREAT!!
