‘Medieval Times’ Will Make You Feel Like Royalty

GameStop, Inc.

On a cool fall evening I drove my family down Beach Blvd for my latest assignment, only this one was different, it was special.  This one they could go with daddy as I drove them to a “Princess Castle” called Medieval Times in Buena Park, CA.  Earlier in the day, to get the kids buttered up, I had told them we would be visiting a princess castle that night and since then they could barely contain their excitement.

It’s been a long time since I have been to Medieval Times, it was also the first time I was able to experience it through the eyes of my three daughters; Sofia, Lorelei, and Kara.  Upon arrival their excitement was palpable, in fact it was infectious.  Like many of us I have become a bit jaded as an adult, things that excited me as a child often times lose their luster through hindsight colored glasses.  There is a reason venues like Disneyland do so much better than Six Flags, because they don’t just offer you rides, they offer you an experience, and Medieval Times has experience in spades.

If you have watched their commercials or seen Medieval Times in movies such as The Cable Guy, the takeaway for most will be that this is a group or Larpers putting on a jousting show.  Nothing could be further from the truth, from the moment we arrived each of the employees (with a straight face) addressed us as lords and ladies.  While this may seem trivial, and at first it felt a little odd, it’s just the beginning of an evening where my wife, children and I were treated to a feast and a show inside of a magical “Princess Castle”.

Tomato soup you say?

After we were sat we were greeted by our server as lords and ladies once again, my girls were starting to get a kick out of this and the excitement in the room was beginning to pulse through their little bodies.  You can tell the staff and cast of Medieval Times is a well oiled machine, from the moment you enter the stadium there isn’t a single misstep.  From cheesy one liners to epic battles the cast delivers on point and on time.

No sooner had we put in our drink orders then a maiden appeared with our tomato bisque soup.  Now let me preface by saying I am not a food critic, I do not have a “sophisticated palette”, but I do like to eat.  Leading up to our visit I had read and received comments about the food, and had actually resigned myself to attending a show where I might have to pick something else up to eat on the way home.  Nothing could have been further from the truth.  The food was delicious, flavorful and plentiful.  My 5 year old devoured her soup, then the rest of her sisters.  The garlic bread barely lasted seconds, the chicken was tender and juicy.  Maybe it wasn’t classy dining but it was tasty and hit the spot.

Medieval Times gave us the gift any parents of young children love.  A break, a break from sibling rivalry, a break from temper tantrums, a break from food complaints.  It was the perfect trifecta as our children were stuffing their mouths and engrossed in the show going on in front of them.  Our 3 year old Kara sat enraptured the entire time, while our 5 year old Lorelei and 10 year old Sofia screamed encouragement for the Red Knight at the top of their lungs.  Sadly though on this evening the Red Knight was not triumphant but our group most certainly was.  We were treated to an evening of kings and princesses, knights and squires, sword fights and jousting, good triumphing over evil.

When all was said and done we took home 3 little princesses that had spent the evening screaming, cheering and wiping juicy chicken and tomato bisque from their faces.  From the costumes to the vernacular Medieval Times works tirelessly to make sure every guest is taken care of at their shows, it’s pretty obvious their goal was to make us feel like royalty.  So my lords and ladies I would encourage you to get down to your local castle post haste and enjoy the Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament.
