MARVEL Contest of Champions – Mobile Game Review: Contest of In-App Purchases

GameStop, Inc.

MARVEL Contest of Champions is a mobile game available for free for iOS and Android. It is a fighting game that pit’s earth’s mightiest heroes against each other and the adaptoids in a cosmic battle helmed by The Collector. The game pits you versus Kang the Conqueror as you pit your collected fighters against each other, you attempting to save the universe and Kang attempting to, well, conquer.

The game features Marvel’s most famous characters such as Captain America, Iron Man, Scarlet Witch, Spider-Man, Hulk, etc. The main story of the game has you traverse a game board a la Mario Party style and you fight an opponent at every stop. There are different fighter types that have advantages and weaknesses over others, so it is recommended to have as many types as possible in order to have a strength for anything thrown your way. After every story you collect gems to purchase powers ups and other characters.

The game play is very simple, it involves swipes and taps. Combos are strictly determined by timing, and specials are simply a button press and combo meter away. It is a very straight forward game that looks amazing and functions very fluidly.

However, a mediocre story, simple and repetitive gameplay, and obvious attempt to cash grab greatly outweighs the polished look and fluid function of the game. The moves are exactly the same for every character, and a character’s usefulness is dependent on the rarity of it. So the base characters you begin with quickly become obsolete and you will quickly find yourself logging in daily and consecutively to get a chance at a better character. The game requires absolutely no skill, and lacks any depth in it’s story. The story is more of a situation designed to throw as many Marvel characters in a game as possible that will entice people to get the app. It’s kind of the DC Universe approach, but in gaming.

The animation and character models are superb. Very detailed and high quality models and textures for a mobile app. However, they cheap out by basically just putting a new skin on a character type. Deadpool and Punisher are the exact same models but with different skins. Their moves and specials are exactly the same. The game is nothing more than a pretty package.

This game is a low quality rip off of DC’s Injustice mobile game. Which itself was definitely a cash grab, that forced you to get new characters constantly in order to finish higher levels, but at least it had the purpose of unlocking features in the console game version. MARVEL Contest of Champions is a good looking waste of time and storage space. The game lacks any depth, and forces replay of stages in order to get full completion credit, without providing any real incentive or reasons other than to see it say 100% complete. As a rather die hard Marvel fan, I am disappointed and would not recommend this game to anyone for any reason. If you want to see your favorite Marvel heroes in a video game, I would suggest Ultimate Alliance or Marvel vs. Capcom series.

Marvel Contest of Heroes: 1/10
