Marat MychaelsEvery 20 years, the comic industry goes through a dynamic shift. DC will either have a “Crisis,” a “Flashpoint” or a “New 52.” Marvel will start over with new “Number Ones,” or an “Ultimates” universe. In that same vain, independent publishers and creators are having their resurgence.

As Image Comics celebrates its 20th anniversary, the creator has resurfaced as the celebrity. One of those creators who has come full circle is Marat Mychaels, a fan favorite who got his start with Image in its infancy.

“I come from the days where all we did was draw comic books, there is no reason to have an ego,” humbly said Mychaels, who is currently working on the independent book Blindside, which was originally published in 1996, by Image Comics.

Mychaels, got his start fresh out of high school after having been friends with Rob Liefeld, who he met at convention when he was 12 years old.

“I was pretty lucky to get in when I got in. My mom gave me a year to succeed, if it failed I would have to go to college – that’s when Image happened,” said Mychaels who started off making $100 a week as an artist while working at a video store and commuting between Los Angeles and Orange County, California.

After having graduated to Marvel and DC Comics, Mychaels continued to grow as an artist while working on Deadpool Corps, allowing him to work with a more “cartoony” style than he was accustomed to. Now as an artist-for-hire and back in the independent scene, Mychaels is doing what he loves most – drawing.

“I wanted to have that passion that I did as a kid and I have that with Blindside. Blindside kicks ass! Jan Goff (writer, Spawn), when he gets his break will blow your mind,” enthusiastically said Mychaels.

Mychaels didn’t like working in the regimented format as a contracted artist, but he said that if he was to return to being a contract player, he would love to do Nightwing.

“You can quote me on this. I’m gay for Nightwing. I love how he came into his own; having his own mythos and rogues gallery and being able to distinguish himself from Batman,” gleefully smiled Mychaels.
